Drones form giant, glowing ‘Star Trek’ insignia over London

The studio behind Star Trek Into Darkness took the film’s title literally, commissioning the flying of a giant, glowing Starfleet insignia in the night sky in London over the weekend. Comprised of 30 LED-illuminated quadrotors, the 308-foot-tall logo rotated in place 118 feet above ground, before dimming its lights alongside those of Tower Bridge and Big Ben in recognition of the WWF’s Earth Hour conservation effort.

Drone blinding system will alert you if someone is spying from the sky and make you invisible

The new system will somehow “neutralize the drone’s capability to see you with its camera.”

Tim Faucett’s company, APlus Mobile makes mobile computer units that manage robots and UAVs for clients like the U.S. Navy and Lockheed Martin. But when he looks to the future, he sees a world where it’s not just the military and government piloting UAVS, but you and me.

Most American’s opposed to being killed by a drone: Poll

97% of those surveyed “strongly agreed” with the statement, “I personally do not want to be killed by a drone.”

The Administration’s controversial drone policy could be headed for a possible setback.  According to a new poll conducted by the University of Minnesota a broad majority of Americans are opposed to being killed by a drone strike on U.S. soil.

The right of the American people to keep and fly drones

The right to keep and fly drones.

A Virginia House panel approved, last week,  a two-year moratorium on drone use within the state. In December, the City Council in Berkeley debated a similar proposal from its Peace and Justice Commission. The Peace and Justice Commission wanted to prohibit the city from purchasing, borrowing, testing or using drones, or allowing “drones in transit.” However, hobbyists would have been allowed to use drones which didn’t carry cameras or audio surveillance equipment. The legislation was shot down because, as Berkeley Councilman Gordon Wozniak argued, “Berkeley doesn’t have jurisdiction over its airspace and can’t enforce it unless we buy Patriot missiles to shoot things down.” Both of these bills were prompted by law enforcement officials wanting to use drones for surveillance and intelligence gathering.The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) calls this “spying.”

Google gives $5 million for drones to hunt African rhino poachers

There are horrific photos of subdued rhinos with their horns amputated by poachers that have become a viral phenomenon. Google is now giving $5 million to a conservation group for lightweight drones that will patrol the African bush, exposing ivory hunters along the way.

An investigation a few years ago bu USA Today found that, of the 250,000 fatal cardiac arrests that occur outside of U.S. hospitals every year, up to 76,000 cases were treatable. That is, the patients would have survived if the ambulance had got there in time. A quick zap with a defibrillator was all that was needed, but many cities could not promise a response within six minutes–the standard survival window.

In a House Homeland Security oversight subcommittee hearing members of Congress raised concerns over the potential security risks posed by jamming and electronic hijacking of unmanned aerial systems, and the potential use of drones by terrorists.

The FBI and the Air Force have approval to fly drones.  But so does Herington, Kansas which has a population of 2,526 according to new documents that shed light on which government agencies are experimenting with the domestic use of unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as drones.

The Pirate Bay wants to use drones to put its servers in the sky

Finding new ways to fend off the feds.

Here’s something that’s so crazy it might be considered genius: the Pirate Bay wants to move its servers—the same servers that draw the ire of the feds—up in the air by using GPS controlled drones. It’s a move to stay ahead of every organization that’s on the Pirate Bay’s tail.

It’s also so crazy that it might be The Pirate Bay joking around, right? Right? Maybe? Who cares! The idea that the Pirate Bay detailed was to launch drones carrying the servers that redirected your traffic to servers in a secret location into the sky. This way, if law enforcement organizations wanted to take the servers down, they would need to use plans to literally “take them out”. The Pirate Bay hilarious says it would be “a real act of war”. What if the drone was over international waters? Who could stop The Pirate Bay then!

Congress ok’s bill that opens skies in U.S. to unmanned drones

Unmanned drones controlled by remote operators on the ground will fly in the same airspace as airliners, cargo planes, business jets and private aircraft.

A final congressional bill was approved Monday to speed the nation’s switch from radar to an air traffic control system based on GPS technology, and to open U.S. skies to unmanned drone flights within four years.
