How smart dust could spy on your brain in the future

Intelligent dust particles embedded in the brain could form an entirely new form of brain-machine interface.

Monitoring real time brain function has advanced in leaps and bounds in recent years.  That’s largely thanks to various new technologies that can monitor the collective behavior of groups of neurons, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, magnetoencephalopathy and positron emission tomography.

What are neuromarketers really trying to sell?

There are around 100 companies worldwide that offer some form of neuromarketing services.

There are an increasing number of terms these days that use the prefix “neuro.” There are people conducting research in neuroeconomics, neuroethics, and of course neuroscience, the broad research field that covers everything from the study of chemical receptors on individual nerve cells to the workings of the entire human brainThe one that has perhaps made the biggest impact outside of the academic world, though, is neuromarketing.

Italian neuroscientist believes human head transplant surgery is possible

Researcher thinks human head transplant surgery is finally possible.

A neuroscientist in Italy believes he’s figured out how to do a full human head transplant. Or body transplant, depending on your perspective. Dr. Sergio Canavero of the University of Turin explains in a recent paper how the procedure would work, describing how a “clean cut” with an “ultra-sharp blade” could leave the two severed spinal cords in the condition to be re-attached. “It is my contention that the technology only now exists for such linkage,” writes the researcher.

Can you train yourself to need less sleep?

80% of us manage between six and nine hours a night; the other 20% sleep more or less than this.

A third of our lives is wasted sleeping – at least that’s how some people see it.  There doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day sometimes. When you feel that way do you yearn to be like the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was said to get by on just four hours sleep a night, or the artist Salvador Dali who wasted as little time as possible slumbering?

Probiotics found in yogurt affects brain function

Women who regularly consumed probiotics through yogurt showed altered brain function.

Researchers from UCLA now have the first evidence that bacteria ingested in food can affect brain function in humans. They found that women who regularly consumed beneficial bacteria known as probiotics through yogurt showed altered brain function, both while in a resting state and in response to an emotion-recognition task, in an early proof-of-concept study of healthy women.

Scientists discover the secret to what makes us itch

What makes us itch?

Scientists  now know the secret. In what will be a boon for millions of people with chronic itch conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis, a small molecule released in the spinal cord has now been found to trigger a process that is later experienced in the brain as the sensation of itch.
