Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.

China’s version of Twitter, a microblogging service called Weibo was launched in 2010.  Just like Twitter, users are allowed to post 140 character messages with @username and #hashtags.  140 characters in Chinese contain significantly more information content than in English.

Why there are no big cities that have municipal broadband networks

Recently, the Institute for Local Self-Reliance compiled this map of all the communities in the country that control their own access to the Internet. There are about 340 of them with publicly owned fiber-optic or cable networks, serving either all or parts of town. Those residents and businesses in the places served don’t have to spar with telecom giants like AT&T and Comcast. They get their Internet instead – like many communities do their electric utility – straight from the city.

The future of education eliminates the classroom

The world is your classroom.

If you and a group of friends are arguing about some piece of trivia and someone says, Let’s look this up on Wikipedia,” and then that person starts to read the information out loud to the group, thus resolving the argument.  This represents a microlearning moment.  This actually foreshadows a much larger transformation – socialstructed learning.

The cyber-cold war between China and U.S.

Cyber cold-war

A lengthy confidential list of computer addresses linked to a hacking group that has stolen terabytes of data for corporations in America was circulated to the country’s internet providers last week by the Obama administration.  But, it left out an important fact that almost every one of the digital addresses could be traced to he neighborhood in Shanghai that is headquarters to the Chinese military’s cybercommand.

Yahoo CEO Mayer Now Requiring All Remote Employees to Not Be (Remote)

“We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.”

Here is the internal memo, courtesy of some very irked Yahoo employees, sent to the company about a new rule rolled out by CEO Marissa Mayer.  The new rule requires that Yahoo employees who work remotely relocate to company facilities.

More ads, higher completion rates on longer online videos

Total video views among internet users in the US were up 23% year over year in Q4 2012.

The appetite of U.S. online video viewers appears far from satisfied. Research from video monetization firm FreeWheel shows that the total video views among internet users in the US were up 23% year over year in Q4 2012. That growth has paralleled an increase in video ad volume, which grew 47% over the same time period, according to FreeWheel. (FreeWheel’s data covers only rights-managed videos, and does not include user-generated content.)

Coursera adds 29 universities and institutes to their online venture.

Providers of free online higher education are expanding the ranks of universities that contribute courses to their Web sites.  They are also adding many schools from outside the United States.
