Hewlett-Packard announced this week that it is exploring jettisoning its struggling PC business in favor of investing more heavily in software, where it sees better potential for growth. Google plans to buy up the cellphone handset maker Motorola Mobility.  Hewlett-Packard and Google’s  moves surprised the tech world.  Marc Andreessen (board member at Hewlett-Parckard) explains why software is eating the world.

90 percent of US net users don’t know about ‘crtl-F’

Did you know about using Control-F?

Dan Russell, one of Google’s anthropologists, conducted a largeish survey of user behavior and discovered that 90 percent of American Internet users don’t know that crtl-F will let them search documents including Web pages. I recently discovered that a smart and technologically literate friend had never heard of alt-tab for application switching; alt-tab being my single most used key combo!

It strikes me that we could probable come up with a list of ten (or even three) things you could teach to the people around you the next time you sit down to help them with a technology problem, “three things every technology user should know.”

Hulu and MSN caught using supercookies to track user data

Supercookies are not a good thing for the user.

The WSJ says that Hulu and MSN, among others, have been found using supercookies to monitor the info of those who visit their sites. Extremely difficult to detect and erase, supercookies can provide significantly more information than standard cookies.

Supercookies can be used to steal a users entire browser history, which can provide highly valuable information on their financial and health status. Microsoft claims they don’t know why supercookies were being used…

China becomes No. 2 ad market in the world

China will surpass Japan in total media spending this year.

Advertising in China, still developing compared to countries like the US and Japan, is beginning to catch up to the demand of consumer-facing companies looking to expand their reach among the world’s largest population and its growing buying power. eMarketer estimates that by the end of this year, ad spending in the China will increase enough to make the country the second-largest advertising market in the world.

NYPD forms new unit to track troublemakers on social media sites

The NYPD has formed Facebook and Twitter units in order to track down and monitor criminals and criminal behavior on social media sites.

The New York Police Department has formed a new unit to track troublemakers who announce plans or brag about their crimes on Twitter, MySpace and Facebook.

These were the words tweeted by a passenger on high-speed train D301 on July 23 that were clearly a cry for help. But these words also initiated a wave of unprecedented “citizen journalism” on China’s Twitter-like micro blogs.

Anonymous fires back at NATO with FBI hack, releases 400MB of their data

Anonymous is scared no longer.

Despite the recent spate of arrests on their side, Anon released 400MB of NATO data courtesy of big-time cybersecurity firm ManTech last night. This is their way of making good on a promise and reiterating that they “aren’t scared anymore”.
You’ll recall that NATO officially condemned Anonymous early last month. Well, as part of their long attack on ManTech, you’ll find a bevy of stolen NATO reports from the past several years, financial charts, and pictures of personnel both on duty and at rest. Pretty big, and this is only a portion of the gig of data they say they’re sitting on…
