Drones could save lives in the Philippines – but why aren’t we using them?

There are three major ways that drones could be saving lives in the wake of the Philippines’ Typhoon Haiyan.

The first mainstream use of quadcopter drones has been to develop ways to end lives, unfortunately. Because, in natural disasters like Typhoon Haiyan, they could be invaluable for saving them.

U.S. Air Forces converts F-16 fighter jets into unmanned drones

The U.S. Air Force goes to great lengths to train their fighter pilots. But even the best simulations lack the visceral experience of a real live fire dogfight. To give their pilots the most realist experience possible, the USAF is working with Boeing to convert some of its old F-16s into pilotless drones that can actually engage in a real dogfight with their pilots.

China hackers are after U.S. military drone technology

This is the largest campaign we’ve seen that has been focused on drone technology.

Drones provide Colorado flooding assistance until FEMA grounded them

Falcon UAV

There has been unbelievable flooding going on in Colorado. The rain has made it difficult (or impossible) for airplanes and helicopters to get in and out of the area. Drones can fly in and out, though, and while they’re not able to pick up people or drop off supplies, they are able to make damage assessment maps to help relief agencies coordinate their efforts. Or at least, they were, until the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) showed up and grounded them. (Video)

China’s delivery companies testing parcel delivery with drones

SF Express is testing a drone it has built for delivering packages in China.

The US has a couple-decade head start on China in building drones that kill people. But when it comes to domestic uses, US businesses are hamstrung because the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) isn’t required to issue commercial drone rules until 2015. In the meantime, one of China’s biggest delivery companies is tinkering with using drones—with Chinese government permission. (Video)

The Defikopter

Definetz, a German non-profit group, wants to make defibrillators readily available across its country so that any time someone has a heart attack, the life saving devices are within arms reach. Definetz is looking to drones to help it bring its vision to fruition. The group has announced the Defikopter, a concept device it designed with drone-maker Height Tech to fly defibrillators to emergency responders or the public by way of a GPS-enabled smartphone app.

Deer Trail, Colorado may issue licenses to shoot down drones

Deer Trail will vote on October 8th on whether to issue permits to hunt drones.

The tiny plains town of Deer Trail, Colorado doesn’t have much to offer visitors.  The town has a gas station, a bar and a small-time rodeo one weekend a year. Florida to test drones in the battle against mosquitoes

Drone packing a shortwave infrared camera to find the pools where larvae are

Mosquitoes are a big problem that plagues the world.  We have recently seen a sticker that will render the wearer invisible to mosquitoes.  Now, Florida, the paradise of marshy wetlands i.e. mosquito breeding grounds, is gearing up for an experiment involving aerial drones to fight mosquitoes.
