The U.S. Navy has been testing a large-scale swarm of autonomous boats designed to overwhelm enemies according to reports from Jeremy Hsu. In the test, a large ship that the Navy sometimes calls a high-value unit, HVU, is making its way down the river’s thalweg, escorted by 13 small guard boats. Between them, they carry a variety of payloads, loud speakers and flashing lights, a .50-caliber machine gun and a microwave direct energy weapon or heat ray.

The U.S. Air Force has deployed two of its most advanced long-distance surveillance drones to Japan.
Japan has been the world’s playground for design innovation for decades. But now it may become ground zero for the future of something far more hostile: military drones.
The Transformer is a futuristic long-range aircraft that divides into smaller ones during or upon arrival at its mission.
By 2040, 3D printers could be so advanced they could create small unmanned aircraft, BAE Systems claim. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) could then potentially be used as a group of wide-winged aircraft for protracted or enduring surveillance or as rotary-winged UAVs to rescue single civilians or soldiers from dangerous situations, the defense firm’s scientists and engineers suggest.

Drones are useful in multiple ways: from delivering packages to acting as lifeguards to being spies for the military to providing Internet coverage. Now media outlets are looking at the use of drones for their reporting, especially since drones can get into areas that people, or helicopters, cannot.
