Why Denver needs to be on your tech radar next year

Denver will become one of the few American cities that allows its residents to purchase and recreationally consume marijuana starting in January. It’s a move that is expected to create jobs and generate tax revenue. Denver is roughly 1,200 miles away from the heart of Silicon Valley, where San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed is pushing for restrictions that will shutter many of the city’s medical marijuana dispensaries.

UK’s Angel CoFund can super-charge angel syndicates with extra cash

The Angel CoFund is a government-backed fund in the UK.

Startups in the UK that are raising financing have a new route to funds in the shape of a government-backed fund which can super-charge an Angel round with extra cash. The UK government-backed fund, Angel CoFund ,is able to make initial investments of between £100,000 to £1 million into businesses, alongside syndicates of business angels. Angel CoFund launched in November 2011, and it was an early backer of Yplan, the events app which this year raised $12 million and PlayJam (a games maker for smart TVs). The fund started out investing in just some parts of the UK, but now it works nationwide. And it’s now had its first exit in its short, two year history.

Entrepreneurs were more likely to cheat and shoplift when the were teens: Study

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, was arrested in 1977 for a traffic violation.

We see entrepreneurs as successful, self-made men and women. We value their innovation and charitable endeavors. Yet we also associate plenty of negative characteristics with entrepreneurs,stereotyping them as selfish and out to make a profit at whatever cost.

Where are all of the women entrepreneurs in tech startups?

The number of technology companies founded by women is only 3%.

Only 3% of technology companies are founded by women. This is despite the fact that women-led private technology companies get 35% higher return on investment, that the venture-backed ones have 12% higher revenue, and that women-owned companies with $10M in revenue have 47% higher growth than the average 10M in revenue company. Sadly, however, 98% of women-owned companies never make it over $1M in annual revenue.
