Social media in the workplace – Is anyone actually working?

Everyone spends their time discussing the work they should be doing rather than actually doing it.

It seems like almost everyone is social today.  Every minute, Twitter users average 100,000 tweets, Facebook users post 684,478 pieces of content, Tumblr blog owners publish 27,778 new posts and Flickr users add 3,125 new photos. Facebook and Twitter are great tools for connecting and communicating with people in our social lives, or for brands communicating with customers, the real value of pure-play social tools as standalone applications within a business has yet to be proven.

Facebook’s silent majority holds the key to the company’s future

If Facebook can persuade that silent majority to become more engaged in the site its future looks pretty bright.

Facebook is a pretty divisive company. One group took to the the social network, sharing their lives in updates and shifting a good portion of their social interactions onto Facebook’s sprawling social graph. The other group  took the opposite direction, avoiding the site entirely, or canceling their accounts, or griping as they came to endure Facebook as a necessary evil of being online.

Criticism against Instagram and what it says about the future of media

Most criticism toward Instagram borders on hatred.

Instagram is a simple service that lets people share their photos with others from a mobile device.  They get a lot of criticism, bordering on hate. And it’s not just because the tiny startup is being acquired by Facebook recently for $1 billion, which will make all of its employees exceedingly rich — it’s because some people seem to believe that the ease with which amateur photographers can post photos to the service, and the filters Instagram provides in order to add special effects to them, are ruining photography. This isn’t really that surprising: it’s the same kind of criticism that has been made about blogging, citizen journalism and Twitter, among other things — and in each case the critics have been somewhat right, but mostly wrong.
