Being popular in school leads to earning more later in life

 

Popularity pays because those who learn to play the game in high school are figuring out what they need to know to succeed when they enter the workplace.

According to a new study released this week, those in the top fifth of the high school popularity pyramid garnered a 10% wage premium nearly 40 years after graduation, compared to those in the bottom fifth.

Women held back from advancement in the workplace by colleagues’ wives

Only 28% of men, compared with 49% of women, see gender bias as still prevalent in the workplace.

There hasn’t been much progress for women seeking top leadership roles in the workplace in the past decade.  The percentages of women running large companies, or serving as managing partners of their law firms, or sitting on corporate boards have barely budged even though female graduates continue to pour out of colleges and professional schools.

Dogs could lower stress at work and improve morale

Researchers studied 75 people at a manufacturing company where each day for a week 20 to 30 people were allowed to bring their dogs to work.

Bringing a dog to work could come with practical difficulties, but a trial at an American company suggested it improved people’s job satisfaction.

Stress has become number one cause of long-term illness.

The pressure of the recession is taking it’s toll as stress becomes the number one cause of long-term absence from work for first time, figures show.  Research in almost 600 organizations also showed a link between job security and mental health issues, with employers planning redundancies ”significantly” more likely to report problems among their staff.

Does the Gender Pay Gap Come Down to Boys Being More Competitive?

A new study has found that there is a gender gap between the sexes when it comes to competition with boys much more likely to want to compete with others than girls.  As early as four years of age boys are more competitive than girls and remain so into adulthood, according to new a study. That could explain why men earn more than women.
