The FBed

If you are with obsessed with Facebook and  can’t stand being away it out of fear of missing a post or a poke from a friend, we found the bed for you. Of course, you could be like most people and just charge your smartphone at the bedside, but this concept is better for the true Facebook fan. It’s called the Facebook bed. I imagine Zuckerberg has something similar. (Pics)

The SOPA blackout: Wikipedia, Reddit, Mozilla, Google, and many others protest proposed law

wiki-pedia-blackout-rm-verge-1_large_verge_medium_landscape

Two new laws proposed by US legislators, the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act, have been attracting a very negative reaction from the web community over the past couple of months, which is today culminating in a day of protests. Aiming to curtail copyright infringement on the web by giving the US government unprecedented new powers, both SOPA and PIPA have been rejected as overreaching and unhelpful laws that cannot coexist with a free and open internet.

A lot of websites (most notably Wikipedia) are going dark today in protest of SOPA.

But the humor site The Oatmeal easily wins for its hilarious GIF about the proposed law. In its own way, it does a better job of explaining what SOPA means than a lot of the serious sites out there.

Here it is after the jump. Watch and laugh…

Goofy Facebook shower curtain

social-shower-curtain-550x550-500x500

Hey look! I’m on Facebook in the shower?

This Facebook themed shower curtain isn’t creepy because of the graphics or text printed on it, but rather because it assumes you’ll have people spying on you while you take a shower!

And, while it may be meant for couples or roommates comfortable with sharing their shower time with others, I’m sure even in those situations it would get old quickly, prompting them to wonder “where did you put the plain old shower curtain I used to know and love?”

How people are turning to Facebook for organ donors

damon-kidney
Damon Brown’s Facebook plea for a kidney paid off.
These days people are using Facebook for a lot more than looking at friends’ photos or playing addictive word games. Facebook and other social media sites are quickly becoming a go-to place to find a generous person with a kidney to spare.

Why we add and remove friends on Facebook (infographic)

facebook+1-1

Friends or frenemies

Why do we add and remove friends on Facebook?  Research from NM Incite, a Nielsen McKinsey company, reveals that there are innumerable factors that help Facebook users decide to add a friend or cull someone from the fold, though knowing someone in real life is the top reason cited for friend-ing someone (82%) and offensive comments are the main reason someone gets the boot (55%).

fPrivacy lets you control Facebook app permissions

fprivacyeeee

Change your permissions and change your Facebook life.

fPrivacy is a Chrome plugin that lets you granularly opt out of stalker-esque Facebook app permissions like “Post to my wall” or “Access profile info” whenever the app authorization dialog appears. Woohoo!

Creator Chad Selph made the extension because Facebook apps have been too grabby for far too long — taking an all or nothing approach to permissions…

Why some people are Facebook resisters

Facebook

Two thirds of Americans are on Facebook, but there are some people who happy sitting it out.

After a chance encounter on an elevator Tyson Balcomb quit Facebook. He found himself standing next to a woman he had never met — yet through Facebook he knew what her older brother looked like, that she was from a tiny island off the coast of Washington and that she had recently visited the Space Needle in Seattle.

Instagram is the year end winner.

Apple released its iTunes Rewind 2011 and App Store Rewind 2011 today, the company’s annual lists detailing of the top selling apps, music, TV shows, movies and podcasts for the year. This year, the biggest winner on the apps front was Angry Birds, which ran away with the number one spot on the iPhone and iPad -in all categories except top free iPhone app, which was awarded to Facebook.

Cyber Monday piggybacks on social media to become top online shopping day

cyber-monday-facebook-users-graph-done-21

When the term Cyber Monday was coined in 2005, the Monday after Thanksgiving was the 12th biggest online shopping day of the year. That year, Facebook had 5.5 million users and Twitter didn’t exist. In 2010, Cyber Monday was the #1 biggest online shopping day of the year, with sales topping $1 billion. I believe the growth of social media and the importance of Cyber Monday are correlated because peer -to-peer sharing of deals and owned marketing channels like Facebook Pages and Twitter accounts are bringing promotions directly to where users spend their time online.

The red line is where Cyber Monday ranked among the top online shopping days (from comScore press releases) for that year. Aside from 2008, which is an outlier due the recession, there is a trend in Cyber Monday popularity growing along with Facebook users…
