The broadband future is faster, but still not distributed evenly

Broadband connections over 10Mbps dubbed high broadband.

The number of broadband connections over 10 Mbps — dubbed “high broadband,” has grown by 73 percent from the third quarter of 2011 to the third quarter of 2012, according to the latest data from Akamai.  The U.S. has also see a 20 percent overall increase in average speed  to 7.2 Mbps over the past year, but the number of people who have adopted broadband (measured at anything above 4 Mbps) was 62 percent, which puts the U.S. at No. 12 in the worldwide rankings when it comes to adoption and No. 9 when it comes to average speeds.

Most polluted cities of the world’s biggest economies

Smog in Beijing

Beijing, China is frequently shrouded in dense, yellowish smog so thick that the other side of the road is obscured. But over the past weekend the deadly smog that enveloped the city was so bad that air-quality readings from a monitor on the roof of the American Embassy said simply: “Beyond Index”. (Chart)

Ending the global food crisis – we just need to make use of what we have

We could double our food supply just by making farming, shipping, and cooking more efficiently.

By 2075 the global population is set to hit 9.5 billion.  It is widely assumed the world will eventually run out of food. According to one UN study, we will need to increase agricultural production 70% by the middle of the century, if we’re to cater to all the expected bellies.

75% of world leaders are now on Twitter

Digital Policy Council (DPC) has a new survey that shows 75 percent of the world’s heads of state have a presence on Twitter.  A total of 164 countries were evaluated by the DPC study, and it found this year that 123 of them have a head of state that is on Twitter, either with a personal handle or an official government one. That’s up significantly from 2011, when 69 out of the 164 countries had a Twitter presence.
