Prosthetics of the future will be powered by bodily fluids

prosthetics

Prosthetics of the future may draw their power from juices in the brain.

These days, the most advanced robotic prosthetics take their commands from the brain. And pretty soon, they may be drawing their power from juices in the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid, that is. Electrical engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are developing a novel platinum-coated fuel cell that runs off the glucose found in bodily fluids. Their specific aim is to implant the fuel cells in liquid pockets of the brain and use them to run low powered components in a neural prosthetic. They described a prototype this week in the journal PLoS One.

Scientists restore sight to blind mice by regenerating optic nerve

lab mouse

Scientists restore vision to blind mice.

There are three blind men who have an inherited eye disorder that had destroyed the light-sensing cells of their retinas many years ago.  Now one of the blind men can walk around at night navigating by streetlight and headlights.  Another can read his own name.  And the third mean has been able to see his fiancée’s smile for the very first time.  All of this has been made possible by the retinal implants they have been fitted with.  The implants took over from the broken cells.  They sense incoming light by converting it into electrical impulses delivered to the brain.  They aren’t close to having 20/20 vision, but they have restored sight to people who have lived without it for years.

Kid invents candy cure for ailment

lollipop 43453453

What other things can we cure with lollipops?

A 13-year-old girl from Connecticut named Mallory Kievman has come up with a pretty clever cure for hiccups: vinegar lollipops! She developed the idea after researching various at-home remedies—a teaspoon of vinegar, hard candy, etc—as well as the physiological reason for a bout of hiccups.

Mallory explained to the New York Times that the vinegar “triggers a set of nerves in your throat and mouth that are responsible for the hiccup reflex arc.” Over-stimulating those nerves cancels out the message to hiccup, problem sovled…

Repairing heart attack damage without using stem cells

xray

Researchers used molecules called microRNAs to convert scar tissue (called fibroblasts) into heart muscle cells.

When someone suffers a heart attack, scar tissue forms over the damaged areas of the heart, reducing the organ’s function.   In a new study, scientists successfully turned this scar tissue into working heart muscle without the use of stem cells.

Engineered stem cells seek out and kill HIV in living mice

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Expanding on previous research providing proof-of-principle that human stem cells can be genetically engineered into HIV-fighting cells, a team of UCLA researchers have now demonstrated that these cells can actually attack HIV-infected cells in a living organism.

Fantastic Voyage type wireless devices travel through your bloodstream to fix you up

wireless device

A wireless medical device can move through the bloodstream controlled by a magnetic field.

Eventually, implantable medical devices will be able to dispense drugs, get rid of blood clots and perform micro-surgeries inside our bodies.  But powering these devices could be problematic. The point is to have minimally invasive gadgets keeping tabs on our health, cutting patients open to swap out their batteries is not an ideal situation. (Video)
