By 2015 all textbooks in South Korea will go digital

Some schools are already using textbooks displayed on notebook computers.

All of South Korea’s elementary-level educational materials will be digitized by 2014.  And by 2015, the entire school-age curriculum will be delivered on an array of computers, smart phones and tablets.   South Korea’s education ministry is yet to announce the make or model of the devices it will purchase, it has revealed it will spend $2.4 billion buying the requisite tablets and digitizing material for them.

IDC study predicts world’s data will grow by 50 times by 2020

Unstructured information – such as files, email and video – will account for 90% of all data created over the next decade.

1.8 zettabytes (or 1.8 trillion gigabytes) of data will be created in 2011 alone. That is the equivalent to every U.S. citizen writing 3 tweets per minute for 26,976 years. And the number of servers managing the world’s data stores will grow by ten times over the next 10 years.

The University of Chicago will be opening a new  library tomorrow that will use a massive automated retrieval system, turning the whole library experience on it’s head. The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library is designed to accommodate the way people study and research today — online. The structure’s large spaces are made for computer work and have no traditional bookshelves. (pics and video)

Fewer American Households Own TVs

114.7 million households will own a television in 2012, down from 115.9 million this year.

These days fewer Americans own TV sets, research firm Nielsen has found. For the first time in 20 years Nielsen says it expects a drop in the number of U.S. households with a television set. According to Nielsen the decrease likely has to do with two factors: poverty and the rise of high-tech alternatives.
