App activity by Facebook users shared more than 1 billion times each day

Platform is getting major results.

Facebook said users share their app activity more than one billion times each day using the social network. These include details like the music they’re listening to (done 40 billion times so far), their reading progress (shared 40 million times), and their fitness updates.

NFL fandom based on Facebook likes

Facebook took a look at football fandom across the country as the Super Bowl gets closer.

The National Football League is one of the most popular sports in America with some incredibly devoted fans. At Facebook we have about 35 million account holders in the United States who have Liked a page for one of the 32 teams in the league, representing one of the most comprehensive samples of sports fanship ever collected. Put another way, more than 1 in 10 Americans have declared their support for an NFL team on Facebook.

France is seeking new ways to raise funds.  Because of frustration with American technology companies that dominate its digital economy which are largely beyond the reach of fiscal authorities, France has proposed a new levy.  They are proposing an internet tax on the collection of personal data.

Instagram drops from 40 million to 17 million active users in one month

Instagram loses half it’s active users.

At the end of 2012, Instagram changed its Terms of Service (ToS) and it has proved far more calamitous for the Facebook-owned Photo app than first imagined. According to new data, Instagram appears to have lost half of its active users in a month.

Facebook helps FBI bust botnet crime ring

Facebook became involved in the fight after botnets also targeted the social network.

According to an announcement this week, the FBI arrested 10 people associated with the a crime ring pushing the malware Yahos.   The malware has affected over 11 million people. Facebook’s security team helped the FBI by identifying both the criminals and the victims.

Nielsen releases 2012 Social Media Report

85.5 million people access social networks via a smartphone or tablet app.

People are accessing the web more frequently and for longer periods, using smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and smart TVs both in the U.S. and globally. We’re still using PCs as well, but personal computer usage of social media is just about the only category that’s down: 4 percent fewer Americans connected to the Internet via a PC in 2012, while 82 percent more connected via the mobile web and 85 percent more connected via a mobile app.
