The serial entrepreneur, Tim Tuttle,  who co-founded web acceleration technology company Bang Networks and video search engine Truveo (acquired by AOL), has returned with his third startup, Expect Labs, which he co-founded with Moninder Jheeta (who built infrastructure for Truveo.) Expect Labs has announced its first product, an iPad app for simplified group conferencing called MindMeld that is built upon Expect’s core technology concept — anticipatory computing. Even as a demo, it is an impressive piece of technology that shows where the future of computing is headed. (video)

Granny designs carrying solution for iPad

Featured Exhibitor banner 2

The Kickstarter video that helped kick things off.

The Original Leather Handle for iPad was created on a whim, first out of a file folder and later out of leather.

Inventor Cate Vincent, one of the exhibitors at the 2012 DaVinci Inventor Showcase, is no stranger to the inventor realm. In fact, this is her 15th startup! Innovation and creativity course through her veins on every level. Recently she took some time to answer a few questions about how a granny could create a solution for an iPad, the dilemma of naming her product and how Apple actually created her product market for her…

Screen rage is the new temper-tantrum

screen rage problem

Don’t take away the iPad!

At five years-old, it’s no fun getting interrupted while you’re focused on something. As a parent, I compensate for that by employing a series of intricately planned measures to guide my son from whatever he happens to be doing towards whatever it is that I want him to do instead.

The extremity of these measures depends entirely what’s being interrupted. If he’s playing outside with his sister, the steps I take are fairly mundane. I give him a few, gentle time checks (“five minutes until dinner” … “3 minutes until dinner” …), and then offer something enticing enough to make putting down the ball seem like less of an intrusion (“Tonight’s chicken has both teri and yaki on it!”).

If I need to transition my son from building a cardboard village with grandma to going to bed for the night, I need to combine my time checks with some subtle threats and an Obi Wan Kenobi-like response to his three hundred or so repetitions of some variation of, “No. I don’t want to. But you said. Why are you doing this to me?”

The techniques are all pretty simple and effective. Until it’s time to get him to put down the iPad.

Half of all households in the U.S. own at least one Apple product

Half-of-US-homes-own-Apple-products

More than 55 million homes have at least one Apple product.

According to CNBC’s All-America Economic survey, half of all U.S. households own at least one Apple product.  That’s more than 55 million homes with at least one iPhone, iPad, iPod or Mac computer. And one-in-10 homes that aren’t currently in that group plan to join it in the next year.

iPad can be a pain in the neck: study

ipad

Harvard study finds the iPad is putting a lot of strain on the neck muscles.

A record breaking 15.43 million iPads have been sold by Apple in the last three months of 2011, which means a lot of people are starting to use tablet computers. And with last week’s news that Apple is planning to bring textbooks to the iPad — well, that’s a lot more people who may start to use tablets, too.

Apple’s iBooks 2 initiative for the priviledged few could leave most children behind

apple-ibooks-2

Apple’s iBooks 2

Apple’s new iBooks 2 initiative has the potential to vastly improve the K-12 learning experience.  They will offer attractive digital textbooks with interactive features like videos, animations, definitions, flashcards, and quizzes. But, with the proprietary nature of the software it means that publishers, parents, and schools will be locked into Apple’s ecosystem.

Zerochroma 222

Zerochroma’s iPad case.

Although we saw an lot of different ones, one of my favorite accessories at ShowStoppers on Tuesday evening was the iPad case from Zerochroma.  The sleek design and simplicity of the product makes it a must have for iPad owners.  Although the smart cover for the iPad is functional as a stand you just don’t get the awesome functionality  the Zerochroma provides.  The beauty of the Zerochroma cover is that it works with your smart cover…

Beanpad for iPad

IMG_1146

When the 70s meet an iPad.

A lot of new devices are starting to flood the market that aim to better the viewpoint of your iPad or make it more versatile. The Beanpad by Mojo Worx Asia is no exception. This invention enlists the wildly successful hippy era trend of beanbags and combines it with a very contemporary device holder. What may set this invention apart from the others on the market is the free-form adjustment capability along with the vibrational absorption aspect, making it ideal for RVs, boats and other similar outdoor or off road excursions.

It also boasts three orientation positions making it possible to watch things landscape, portrait or simply have the bag in the middle for everyday use. While this is certainly a clever way to hold your iPad, the question of durability in the long run arises so we’ll have to wait to hear reports from the field about that part. In the mean time, grab your bag and start using your pad, man!
