Computerization. Automation. Artificial intelligence. Technology. Innovation. Robots. These are the many names of an invisible force that has been stoking progress and killing jobs for centuries. But it’s different now because nearly half of jobs in America today could be automated in the next 10 to 20 years, according to a new paper by Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne, discussed recently in The Economist. The question is: Which half?

Engineers and computer science majors had top starting salaries in 2013

The outlook for new grads is slightly better than 2012.

Engineering and computer science majors have the best shot at landing a high-paying position in this tough job climate. The outlook for new grads is slightly better than 2012, according to data from a nonprofit group, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), . For students that land a job, the average starting salary is $45,600 and salaries are 2.6 percent higher than in 2012.

After the start of the worst six months for the U.S. labor market since the Great Depression five years ago, we learned last week that 203,000 new jobs were created in November and the unemployment rate dropped to 7%. Discussion in the immediate aftermath of the news centered on whether the report marked more of the ho-hum same or a sign that, after three years of puttering along, the economy might finally be preparing for a return to something approaching prosperity.

Developing apps for wearable computing poses new challenges for developers

There will be a job market for wearable computer developers and engineers.

Developers are still learning how to use Google Glass. The Glass Development Kit is expected to be unveiled shortly and will build on the Android toolkits that a small but growing developer community is learning their way around the platform. But there are unique challenges for wearable computer software creation. How do you create apps for a wearable computer that lacks a mouse, a keyboard, and a touchscreen? How do you create programs for a hybrid of glasses and a computer that depends on a voice interface and a single button? It creates challenges.
