As part of the ‘Robotics in Timber Construction’ research project at the University of Stuttgart, the peanut-shaped pavilion, Landesgartenschau Exhibition Hall, was created. Constructed entirely by a robotic prefab building system, it showcases the current developments and innovations in computational design and robotic fabrication for lightweight timber construction. Jobs lost to automation may not be all doom and gloom

Arrival of human level automated systems marks a transformative time in history.

Nearly half of U.S. jobs could be at risk of computerization over the next two decades, according to a new study from the Oxford Martin Program on the Impacts of Future Technology. This does not necessarily need to be bad news, says futurist Thomas Frey in a recent Futurist Magazine essay.

Printable robotic components that, when baked, automatically fold into prescribed three-dimensional configurations.

MIT researchers have developed some printable robotic components that fold into a specific 3D shape when they are ‘baked’ under heat. The team, led by Professor Daniela Rus, has introduced the “bakeable robots” in the hope that they lead to a variety of self-assembling designs that function on their own and fold together like origami.

The Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRLs) are not designed to replace biological limbs that you might be missing, but rather robotic limbs designed to augment the number of limbs that you have already. Like no other tool, robots can capture a child’s imagination by creating a fun, physical learning process. With robots, kids learn programming via interactive play by moving a robot in various sequences and using intuitive, visual programming on a computer screen. The children also learn STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) by watching and interacting with robots that demonstrate the practical results of the day’s lesson.

Robots are writing more news than you think

Ninety percent of the news could be written by computers by 2030.

Software is writing news stories with increasing frequency. In a recent example, an LA Times writer-bot wrote and posted a snippet about an earthquake three minutes after the event. The LA Times claims they were first to publish anything on the quake, and outside the USGS, they probably were.

MIT lead researcher,  Ankur Mehta is working on a project that quite literally enables people to print robots on a standard piece of paper at home. It might sound crazy, but there’s a lot of complicated math to back up the fact that you can create nearly any shape you like by folding paper. Once you’ve created the proper shape, Mehta demonstrates that you can combine it with about $20 worth of electronics to create a fully functioning robot.
