Coding is just a fundamental tool, the same way writing in English and algebra are.
There’s a good chance that your kid’s classroom will be remodeled by the tech industry. After years of more or less resisting the pull of the web, both college and K-12 seem ripe to be remade for the digital age. There’s political buy-in. There’s investor buy-in. There’s a pervasive sense that it’s just time.
We should want more college graduates. But we should also want fewer students at colleges with high drop-out rates.
During the Great Recession college enrollments went up. Since 2012, college enrollment has gone down. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, Spring 2013 enrollments fell 2.3 percent from last year. The drop-off has sped up since the Fall.

MOOCs are a powerful force for good.
Where did all of the MOOC mania come from? It came faster than Facebook and it’s here to stay. In just a year MOOCs emerged from a unique mix of entrepreneurial spirit, a few leading US Universities, supported by not-for-profits and venture capital. It’s an ecosystem that can take an idea and support it through to a sustainable business. That’s impressive.

Student debt is a dangerous bubble that is piling unprecedented levels of debt on young people.
Houses and cars power recoveries. And young people aren’t buying either. That’s a New York Fed study conclusion and that can be easily read as blaming student debt for holding back the recovery by squashing home and auto sales.
