Nielsen releases 2012 Social Media Report

85.5 million people access social networks via a smartphone or tablet app.

People are accessing the web more frequently and for longer periods, using smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and smart TVs both in the U.S. and globally. Social media in the workplace – Is anyone actually working?

Everyone spends their time discussing the work they should be doing rather than actually doing it.

It seems like almost everyone is social today.  Every minute, Twitter users average 100,000 tweets, Facebook users post 684,478 pieces of content, Tumblr blog owners publish 27,778 new posts and Flickr users add 3,125 new photos. Up Close Social Shower Curtain

Surprise! I’m in the shower but still a  social menace.

If you’re the kind of person who’s always on Facebook, what could possibly be funnier than a shower curtain that looks like a Facebook Page? A lot of things! But still, this Facebook shower curtain even has a little window for you to pose as your profile pic. What better way to celebrate your addiction? It’ll be hilarious to all those people who are in your bathroom with you while you shower! Or the person who asks to awkwardly photograph you in the shower so you can post it to Facebook. The other group  took the opposite direction, avoiding the site entirely, or canceling their accounts, or griping as they came to endure Facebook as a necessary evil of being online.

Criticism against Instagram and what it says about the future of media

instagram

Most criticism toward Instagram borders on hatred.

Instagram is a simple service that lets people share their photos with others from a mobile device.  They get a lot of criticism, bordering on hate. And it’s not just because the tiny startup is being acquired by Facebook recently for $1 billion, which will make all of its employees exceedingly rich — it’s because some people seem to believe that the ease with which amateur photographers can post photos to the service, and the filters Instagram provides in order to add special effects to them, are ruining photography. This isn’t really that surprising: it’s the same kind of criticism that has been made about blogging, citizen journalism and Twitter, among other things — and in each case the critics have been somewhat right, but mostly wrong.
