Google plans to build $82 million aircraft facility for their private jets

The proposed 29-acre expansion will include an executive terminal, hangars and ramp space large enough to accommodate large business jets and aircraft servicing facilities.

Google and British partner Signature Aviation plan to build a private airport terminal for the executive jet-set and they have received strong backing from local officials and it looks likely to get approval.

MQ-1 Predator Drone

Nearly one third American military aircraft is a drone, according to a congressional report, a 40-fold increase in the drone army from just a few years ago. From tiny man-portable flying wings to behemoth strike planes, unmanned aircraft now make up 31 percent of the military’s air power.

Drones: garage invention spawns multibillion-dollar defense industry

Abraham Karem

Abraham Karem began tinkering with drones in his garage in 1980.

Abraham Karem, is an engineer who had emigrated from Israel.  In 1980 he retreated into his three-car garage in Hacienda Heights outside Los Angeles and, to the bemusement of his tolerant wife, began to build an aircraft.

Airplanes can alter weather increasing chances of rain and snow: Study

hole-punch-clouds

Aircraft increase the chances of snow or rain when they punch holes in clouds after taking off.

Airplanes can influence local weather when they take off and land.  Aircraft increase the chances of snow and rain during take off and landing, according to a  new study, published in the ‘Science’ journal. The finding is based on satellite images of clouds around airports.

FlyNano Electric Microlight You Don’t Need a License to Fly

 flynano 1

FlyNano

A radical new single-seat aircraft dubbed the FlyNano was unveiled at the Aero Friedrichshafen, Germany (April 13-16) byaviation consultant, flight designer and enthusiastic pilot Aki Suokas. You don’t even have to have a license to fly the single-seat fun flyer. It is made entirely of carbon fiber and weighs in at a mere 70kg.  The FlyNano takes off and lands on water. The FlyNano falls under the weight of what is considered to be a plane so you don’t have to worry about applying for a flying license in most parts of the world. (Pics)

Detecting Aircraft Before There Was Radar

radar 1

How air attacks were detected before  radar.

Beginning in the middle of the 1930s, engineering labs in the U.S. and Europe were experimenting with radar systems. Early radars did not have the slick plan position indicator (PPI) displays that modern systems use for plotting target movement for indication of azimuth (direction) and range (distance). Instead, oscilloscopes showed radar returns as amplitude blips along a time base that represented range. Azimuth was determined by where the operator pointed the antenna (rotating versions came later). Since radar cross section stealth technology had not been invented yet, the amplitude of the signal was useful a measure of the size of the target. Hydrogenase

Vincent Callebaut’s latest project, Hydrogenase, aims to create a self-sufficient organic airship.   This conceptual transport system would be comprised of airships that produce biofuel from seaweed.  The project draws its inspiration from nature, as well as from the qualities of its materials and its self-manufacturing processes.  (pics)
