Growth of urgent care centers worries some doctors

An estimated 3 million patients visit urgent cares each week.

In Annapolis, when Emily Auerswald and her children need care for minor illnesses or injuries, they head to a shopping center that has a Starbucks, a Five Guys hamburger joint and an urgent care center.   Doctors Express, an urgent care center,  is open nights and weekends, and accepts walk-ins without an appointment.

The best way to fix the customer’s experience problems is from her side of the marketplace: the demand side.

“Put down the customer. Step away from the marketplace,” Craig Burton once said to a clueless marketing officer   That also comes to mind when you hear about unwanted surveillance of customers rationalized for marketing purposes, or how Big Data lets a company know a customer better than she knows herself.

Solving the software developer shortage

Moving development to the cloud and offering the IDE as a service to developers, a significant amount of their workload has been removed.

The sentiment that software is taking over the world has become widely accepted throughout the tech community.  Last year it was examined in depth by Marc Andreessen.  However, as software continues to infiltrate nearly every industry, there’s a serious consequence taking shape. The demand for development continues to grow exponentially, but the amount of qualified developers that are available to produce this commodity is not. Simply put, the world is running out of developers.

HBO brings streaming-only service to Europe

Some Europeans will get access to the full complement of HBO content for a small fee.

According to Variety, in mid-October an HBO streaming service that does not require an associated cable subscription will be rolled out in Europe. It is confined to only a few European countries, but it’s an embrace from Time Warner to cord-cutters that non-HBO customers have long sought.

Americans turning against ‘stuff’

Millennials are thinking entrepreneurially, viewing themselves as microbusinesses operating in a highly uncertain economic environment.

Millennials aren’t alone as they shift from tangibles (cars and homes) to intangibles (education and access to data). The business sector is moving along the same tangible-to-intangible path as the Millennials, perhaps at an even faster pace. Business spending on nonresidential structures, other than mining-related, is roughly 30% below the 2007 pre-recession highs, while investment in software is up almost 20% over the same period.
