The retailing industry has been challenged for the past few years. There are signs that 2012 will not be any different. One key metric used to judge the health of a store is annual sales per square foot. Research company RetailSails recently ranked U.S. stores based on this metric.

Depreciation of all smartphones is not equal. iPhones can be sold for 53% of their original price 18 months after purchase, while Androids can only be sold for 42% and BlackBerries for 41% on average according to a study by Y Combinator second-hand price guide startup Priceonomics.

Software from Prism Skylabs processes surveillance footage to show how busy a place is without compromising customers’ privacy.
Giants like Amazon and Google have led the huge success of online shopping and advertising thanks to software that logs when you visit Web pages and what you click on. Prism Skylabs is a startup that offers brick-and-mortar businesses the equivalent—counting, logging, and tracking people in a store, coffee shop, or gym with software that works with video from security cameras.
Corporate offices are going to become coworking offices in the future.
If you are a fan of coworking and are going to the SXSW this year in Austin, you might want to arrive a few days early to hit the Global Coworking Unconference Conference (formerly known as the Coworking Unconference) being held in Austin on March 8. The all-day event is geared toward owners and there will be a range of panels on starting and running a space. But at least one discussion might be of interest not only to coworking entrepreneurs but also to forward-thinking managers as well.

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor shows entrepreneurial activity revived in 2011 after years of decline
Early-stage entrepreneurial activity rates surged around the world in 2011, jumping nearly 60 percent in the U.S., according to a survey released this week by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. More than 12 percent of U.S. adults reported starting a business or running new businesses last year, up from just below 8 percent in 2010.
