Google Maps may soon highlight well-lit streets for walkers

Google to provide Android operating system for media displays in cars

New Lighting layer could make walking at night safer.

Google Maps is great for getting directions while driving and using public transport, but in the last year it has been rolling out more features focused on traveling by foot as well. Recently, the company introduced AR walking directions and detailed spoken walking directions for people with vision impairments. In the future, Google may be adding a new feature to help people find safer streets to walk at night.

According to XDA Developers, an Android development community whose members have analyzed the Android APK to look for unreleased features, there are indications of a new Lighting layer in Google Maps. This layer would indicate which streets are brightly lit by street lights by showing a yellow highlight.

Project Sunroof uses Google Maps data to tell you if it’s worth installing solar panels on your roof

With the help of Google Maps, there is a new service called Project Sunroof that aims to provide a “treasure map” of solar energy. Sunroof gives homeowners detailed information about how much solar power their roof can generate and how much money they could save on electricity costs by adding solar panels.

Incredible 3D printed cityscape of Chicago

By now, most people know about 3D printing.  It has has become huge, and more and more companies are creating 3D printers that can perform the most ridiculous prints. Recently people in Chicago took the chance to try out this technology, and they started 3D printing the Chicago cityscape using Google Maps as the base for their models. (Photos)

And from past experience, I wouldn’t get tired again for 2-3 hours, so this was one of those crazy middle-of-the-night periods of free time where I could get something done, and my body didn’t really know I was awake. Nature News along with Columbia University, has created a Google Earth map that shows the different population sizes surrounding nuclear power plants. They are trying to demonstrate the danger threshold of other nuclear plants worldwide, compared to the ongoing nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan.
