New law in California will let kids erase online past

All websites must give minors in California an option to delete user activity.

Google’s Eric Schmidt suggested earlier this year that the internet should have a “delete” button for individuals that wanted to remove troubling information from the web, and thanks to a new law minors in California will get that chance.

Are universities terrified of MOOCs?

The internet has made it possible for people to educate themselves, independently or in groups large and small, on an unprecedented scale.

There hasn’t been much change in universities since the Middle Ages. Universities have the campus with its lecture halls, dormitories, libraries, and laboratories surrounded by leafy quadrangles. They have added giant sports complexes, gyms and swimming pools, and gourmet restaurants, but the basic layout is the same. And the production process hasn’t changed since around 1200. Professors give lectures, students read books and take notes, there are examinations and grades, along with the occasional tutoring session, and a great deal of hanky panky. The professors wear tweed jackets instead of gowns, and the students wear – well, just about anything, including pajamas – but otherwise the university remains one of society’s most conservative institutions.

Coursera earned $1 million in revenue from its verified certificate program

Coursera students who completed the verified certificate program.

Online education startup Coursera, for the first time is sharing details on how it’s faring on the money-making front: the company said it’s earned $1 million from the verified certificate program it launched in January.

What happens in 60 seconds on the internet

Have you ever thought about your activity on the internet at any given moment? You could very easily be jumping from Twitter to Facebook, listening to Spotify, shooting off an email, downloading a movie, reading a news site, Googling background info to better understand aforementioned news site, and that’s just on a slow day. Community colleges go open source to seek fix for remediation

One of the thorniest problems facing higher education is remedial education.  Some community colleges have found a way to dial-up free online courses to help tackle the problem.  The two-year colleges aren’t offering massive open online courses as substitutes for their offerings, however, or for the instructors who teach them.

Adding more artificial intelligence to online learning could make it faster and more fun

More artificial intelligence will make online learning faster and fun.

Udacity has evolved the MOOC (massive open online courses) concept into one that really helps people throughout the course; to complete the course. The most recent completion rates in pilots we’ve been running have been 85 percent, as opposed to 5 percent or 4 percent, which is common in MOOC-land.
