Robo Raven – the first solar-powered robotic bird

Solar power is a great way to keep robots running indefinitely, in theory. And it’s absolutely possible to do it, provided your robot doesn’t need to do anything urgently, you have a ludicrously powerful light source, or your robot is very efficient and spends a lot of time in the sun. That last category has potential for solar powered micro air vehicles, including the University of Maryland’s Robo Raven, which has just gotten kitted out with solar panel wings.

WildCat: Boston Dynamic’s new robot that can run and gallop

WildCat is the newest creation from Boston Dynamics. With a frame that’s somewhat reminiscent of their previous quadruped robot, LS3 (also referred to as mule), WildCat is actually more closely related to a cheetah. Either way you look at it, WildCat is a step forward for robotics.

Futurist at Intel shows how you’ll download and program your own robot

Jimmy, an open source robot.

If you could build your own robot, what would you have it do?  If you’re the type of person who is into building stuff and coding, you may soon get your chance to answer that question for real, courtesy of an interesting project coming from the labs of chipmaker Intel. (Video)

Google’s quest to popularize self-driving cars

How a self-driving car sees the world.

At about 8am every morning, Anthony Levandowski gets into the driver’s seat of his white Lexus for his daily commute to work. Most of us perform this routine five times a week, 50 weeks out of the year. But, Levandowski’s commute is different. He has a chauffeur and it’s a robot.

Spiri: A programmable quadcopter lets developers focus on building airborne apps

Spiri is a programmable quadcopter that’s been designed as a platform for airborne app creation. It’s also autonomous, meaning you don’t have to have mad piloting skills yourself just to test whether your neighbor spy app works. And even if your neighbor gets annoyed and throws a rock at it, Spiri can take a few knocks (thanks to reinforced carbon fiber ribbon protecting its body/blades).

Robot plants can learn how to grow just like the real thing

Soon, plants may have robotic counterparts. Barbara Mazzolai from the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa and colleagues tips that grow by unwinding material and a mechanism to reduce friction when penetrating the soil. The artificial system will be equipped to detect gravity, water, temperature, touch, pH, nitrate and phosphate.

DARPA unveils the Atlas DRC robot

Atlas

Meet Atlas, a massive humanoid robot was unveiled by DARPA at the headquarters of Boston Dynamics, just outside Boston. Atlas was built by Boston Dynamics for the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), whose goal is to advance disaster response robotics. The hope is that Atlas is the first step towards the day when robots, not humans, will be sent to help mitigate major catastrophes, such as the Fukushima nuclear accident. (Photos and video)

Play-i’s robot will teach your child to program

Play-i is making robots to encourage tangible play with technology.

The tech world has collectively decided that programming is an essential skill all kids should learn, perhaps even before they learn to read. The programming market has been saturated with tablet apps aimed at raising the next Zuckerburg.
