In 1960 in the U.S., the average life expectancy for all races and sexes was 69.7 years.  In 2010, the average life expectancy increased to 78.7 years.  In 1959, entrepreneur Del Webb built Sun City, Arizona.  Sun City was the first active retirement community for the over-55.  Webb predicted that retirees would flock to a community where they were given more than just a house with a rocking chair in which to sit and wait to die.  (Pics)

Atlanta Regional Commission project constructed the new ramp to accomodate the aging population in Atlanta.

People are getting old, fast, and they’re doing it in cities designed for the young.  Cities in American are grappling with that fact as work on getting the communities ready for an older population has gotten a late start considering demographers have warned for a long time that the population is about to get older.

Jobs Are Back Just Not For the Middle-Aged Worker

Jobs are back. Just not for everybody.

Like many other things in the stutter-step economic recovery, the job market is finally recovering, but progress is uneven and some people are being left out. The latest jobs report, for example, shows that the economy created 216,000 jobs in March, for a total of about 1.9 million new jobs since employment levels bottomed out at the end of 2009. That’s a healthy pace of job growth that will help bring down the uncomfortably high unemployment rate, and, with luck, cement the recovery.
