Aakash 2 – The $20 tablet that could transform computing as we know it

The 44-year-old CEO of UK/Canadian/Indian startup Datawind, Suneet Tuli, is having a taxing day.  He says he is “underwater”  as he struggles to find a cell signal outside a restaurant in Mumbai. On Sunday Nov. 11, the president of India, Pranab Mukherjee, will unveil the seven-inch Aakash 2 tablet computer Tuli’s company is selling to the government for distribution to 100,000 university students and professors. (If things go well, the government plans to order as many as 5.86 million.) In the meantime, Tuli is deluged with calls from reporters, and every day his company receives thousands of new orders for the commercial version of the Aakash 2. Already, he’s facing a backlog of four million unfulfilled pre-orders.

Young tablet users more willing to pay for online news

People who pay for online news are still the minority – but participation may be growing thanks to tablet computers.

According to the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s new Digital News Report 2012 those who have paid for digital news ranges from 12 percent in Denmark to four percent in the UK. And only six percent of survey respondents said they would be willing, in future, to pay for news from sources they liked.

Harvard study finds the iPad is putting a lot of strain on the neck muscles.

A record breaking 15.43 million iPads have been sold by Apple in the last three months of 2011, which means a lot of people are starting to use tablet computers. And with last week’s news that Apple is planning to bring textbooks to the iPad — well, that’s a lot more people who may start to use tablets, too.

A lot of new devices are starting to flood the market that aim to better the viewpoint of your iPad or make it more versatile. The Beanpad by Mojo Worx Asia is no exception. This invention enlists the wildly successful hippy era trend of beanbags and combines it with a very contemporary device holder. What may set this invention apart from the others on the market is the free-form adjustment capability along with the vibrational absorption aspect, making it ideal for RVs, boats and other similar outdoor or off road excursions.

It also boasts three orientation positions making it possible to watch things landscape, portrait or simply have the bag in the middle for everyday use. While this is certainly a clever way to hold your iPad, the question of durability in the long run arises so we’ll have to wait to hear reports from the field about that part. Less than one third of Americans will buy a new TV in 2012

3D technology hasn’t saved TV.

People are watching less broadcast and cable TV, according to a survey from Accenture. Less than a third intend to buy a new TV in 2012. Smartphones, tablets and computers are eroding traditional TV viewing — bad news for TV manufacturers and traditional content providers.

90 million Americans will use a tablet by 2014

35.6% of all internet users will use a tablet by 2014.

Tablet devices have only been available for a couple of years, but the iPad has propelled them to rapid increases in ownership and usage.  By the end of 2011 it is estimated that 33.7 million Americans will use a tablet device at least monthly—a rise of 158.6% over last year, the year the iPad was released.
