The five big lies of inventors: Common misconceptions can cause the best ideas to fall flat

.

The DaVinci Inventor Showcase will take place on Oct 13th

The economic downturn has forced us to rethink our lives. For many, this means a time of stepping into the workshop to give shape to ideas that have been waiting for the right opportunity to emerge.

While Hollywood likes to portray inventors as the wacky mad-scientist type, nothing is further from the truth. Inventors may be wired differently, but for the most part they are very dedicated, hard-working individuals bent on making the world a better place.

But in the business world, few things go according to plan. New products are especially prone to commercial failure. Many of the failures stem from common misconceptions that steer us radically off course. Here are five big lies that will give you a more realistic picture of how to make the grade in the world of invention…

Job seekers find it difficult to keep up with innovations in their field

Choose your career wisely or be swept aside by new innovations.

Karen Richards is unemployed, but it’s not for lack of trying. She estimates that she has sent out about 100 resumés in the past year.

The Arlington resident theorizes that a few factors have prevented her from landing a job: She’s overqualified for some positions, underqualified for others, and the fact that she’s currently out of work may be a turnoff to some employers.

But there’s another problem that she says could be holding her back. The legal sector is using new software for research and client management, and she isn’t familiar with it…

Meteorite fragments help explain why living things only use molecules with specific orientations

This is an artist’s concept of excess left-hand aspartic acid created in asteroids and delivered to Earth via meteorite impacts. The line at the bottom is a chromatogram showing that left-hand aspartic acid (tall peak in the center, with diagram of left-hand aspartic acid molecule on top) was four times more abundant in the meteorite sample than right-hand aspartic acid (smaller peak to the left, with right-handed aspartic acid molecule on top).

Researchers analyzing meteorite fragments that fell on a frozen lake in Canada have developed an explanation for the origin of life’s handedness — why living things only use molecules with specific orientations. The work also gave the strongest evidence to date that liquid water inside an asteroid leads to a strong preference of left-handed over right-handed forms of some common protein amino acids in meteorites. The result makes the search for extraterrestrial life more challenging…

Oxygen injections could save lives when when patients can’t breathe

Oxygen

Oxygenating blood with microparticles.

Patients who can’t breathe need oxygen quickly to avoid cardiac arrest and brain injury is a big problem. Unfortunately, attempts in the early 1900s to intravenously supply this essential gas failed to oxygenate the blood and often caused dangerous air bubbles. Current treatments, such as blood substitutes, breathing masks, and tubes, aren’t always effective as well since they still rely on the lungs to function or require time to properly administer.
