The challenge of media alignment

Twitter has the opportunity to become extraordinarily aligned with their best users.

Advertisers are the actual customer of the TV networks – not the viewers.  Both of these groups had similar goals for a long time.  Viewers wanted shows they wanted to watch and advertisers wanted lots of viewers to watch these shows.  So the TV networks used ratings as a proxy for advertiser happiness and there wasn’t much of a problem.

Americans dropping pay-TV services in record numbers

DirecTV revealed its first ever quarterly customer losses, with some 52,000 homes dropping the service in the second quarter.

High unemployment, a weak housing market ombined with a mature business prone to regular programming blackouts has seen more than 400,000 American homes drop their pay-TV service since the start of the year.

Senate report blasts for-profit colleges

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) presents findings from a two-year investigation into the for-profit college industry.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) on Monday unveiled an exhaustive report on a two year investigation of the for-profit higher education industry.  The report on the colleges’ business practices, highlighting schools that charge excessively high tuition and shortchange academic investments in order to maximize revenues.

The dark side of open data

Tom Slee published “Seeing Like a Geek” a few days ago.  It is a thoughtful article on the dark side of open data. He starts with the story of a Dalit community in India, whose land was transferred to a group of higher cast Mudaliars through bureaucratic manipulation under the guise of standardizing and digitizing property records. While this sounds like a good idea, it gave a wealthier, more powerful group a chance to erase older, traditional records that hadn’t been properly codified. One effect of passing laws requiring standardized, digital data is to marginalize all data that can’t be standardized or digitized, and to marginalize the people who don’t control the process of standardization.
