Haitz Law in action over the past decades.

Just like Moore’s Law has been predicting improvements in the semiconductors used to make computer processors for decades, Haitz’s Law (see above) predicts an exponential improvement in the semiconductors used in LED technology. The beauty is that we’re almost there – see my LED reviews – so for LEDs to overtake other lighting technologies and become the dominant way we produce light, Haitz’s Law only has to hold for a little while longer, not decades…

Debt problems plague older Americans

Many Americans have to postpone retirement.

Many Americans are reaching their 60s with so much debt they can’t afford to retire.  Before retiring most people would pay off their debts. But as wages have barely kept up with rising prices over the past 35 years Americans have pushed debt higher, living beyond their means. Now, people are postponing retirement, cutting living standards or both.

Regional accents in the U.S. are getting stronger

Regional accents are the hallmark of who you are and are a tie to communities.

The United States is an international melting pot and the average American makes a dozen moves in a lifetime.  And regional accents are alive and well in America. ,William Labov, a professor of linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, says, in fact, regional accents are becoming stronger and more different from each other although it’s not entirely clear why.

Are new technologies making jobs obsolete?

Post office is the latest casualty of digital technology.

Digital technology is slowly but steadily replacing working humans.  And the latest casualty of digital technology is the U.S. Postal Service.  The post office is going to have to drastically scale back its operations or shut down altogether if they don’t find an external source of funding. 600,000 people will be out of work and another 480,000 pensioners facing an adjustment in terms.
