Parents are being encouraged to take an interest in and support their children’s online activity during Safer Internet Day.

Young people are defying the dangers that adults have warned them about and are still taking chances that could put themselves at risk online, according to new research.  Six out of every 10 young people who make contact with strangers on the internet lie about their age, a new survey has revealed, and 43 per cent have online ‘friends’ they’ve never met in real life, says research to mark Safer Internet Day.

Super Tooth Buddy – Ultra Compact Bluetooth Speakerphone for Your Vehicle

Super Tooth Buddy

I stopped by the SuperTooth Buddy booth at CES2011 in January.  I have been looking for something that will allow me to talk on my cell phone when I am in my car, that is simple to set up and use and lets me keep both hands on the steering wheel while talking.  The most frustrating thing for me has been either feeling around on the car seat to see where my cell phone is or digging through my purse, which can be distracting when you are trying to keep both eyes on the road.  The SuperTooth Buddy Speakerphone takes care of all that.  (Pics)

Using the Basking Shark as a model.

Industrial designer Anthony Reale was inspired by the natural flow of water through a basking shark to design a water turbine that could be used to harness the energy of the Detroit River. The basking shark swims for eighteen hours a day with its five foot-wide mouth open to sift for food.

Hamster-Powered Strandbeest Walker

The mad genius at Crafbuartworks created a miniature, hamster-powered strandbeest walker. The walker is hamstered by the intrepid Princess, who is a champ.

The hamster powered? that’s just stupid, which is the exact reason why I did it. It’s different, hasn’t been done before, yet it’s in so many what’s-under-the-hood jokes. It also had a high likelyhood of working, so I had to attempt it. Only problem: I don’t have a hamster, I don’t want a hamster for a pet, and I don’t know what sort of power and weight a little critter like that has. All I know is that I’ve seen them go ballistic on the hamster wheel, and so they must have great weight to power ratio…

Some People Are Born Pessimistic

Some people are born to see the glass as half empty.

Some people cannot help being pessimistic, suggests a new study that found the amount of a chemical in the brain affects how we view the world.  Researchers discovered that levels of a molecule called neuropeptide Y (NPY) directly relates to whether we have a “glass half empty” or “glass half full” attitude towards life.

Unraveling The Secrets of Antarctica’s Fossilized Forests

The Fossilized Tree Rings Don’t Lie

It may be hard to believe, but Antarctica was once covered in towering forests.
One hundred million years ago, the Earth was in the grip of an extreme Greenhouse Effect.
The polar ice caps had all but melted; in the south, rainforests inhabited by dinosaurs existed in their place.
These Antarctic ecosystems were adapted to the long months of winter darkness that occur at the poles, and were truly bizarre.
But if global warming continues unabated, could these ancient forests be a taste of things to come?

Top Ten Most Nutritious Vegetables and How to Grow Them in Your Garden

Fresh-Vegetables-From-Garden-Photo

Growing Vegetables is a nutritious and delicious past time.

A perfectly ripe, juicy tomato, still warm from the sun. Sweet carrots, pulled from the garden minutes (or even seconds!) before they’re eaten. Growing your own vegetables is one of those activities that balances practicality and indulgence. In addition to the convenience of having the fixings for a salad or light supper right outside your door (or on your windowsill), when you grow your own vegetables, you’re getting the most nutritional bang for your buck as well. Vegetables start losing nutrients as soon as they’re harvested, and quality diminishes as sugars are turned into starches. For the tastiest veggies with the best nutrition, try growing a few of these nutrient-dense foods in your own garden. And don’t let the lack of a yard stop you – all of them can be grown in containers as well.
