Space colonization is humankind’s insurance policy against extinction: Elon Musk

moon-base

Space exploration is as urgent as easing poverty or disease—it’s our insurance policy against extinction.

Why would you blow billions of dollars on space exploration when billions of people are living in poverty here on Earth? You have probably heard all of the justifications.

RoomAlive can turn any space into a holodeck

RoomAlive

Microsoft Research revealed Illumiroom last year. Illumiroom used projectors to stretch the image on your TV to take over a whole wall. Now comes the sequel, RoomAlive. The new system can turn every surface in a room–from the floor to the couch cushions to your own skin–into a glowing screen that reacts to your movement. It’s as if your whole analog world has been digitized. And that digital world can see where you’re looking, pointing, and touching, and adapt itself accordingly. (Videos)

navy-swarm

The swarm detects the enemy vessel with radar and infrared sensors.

The U.S. Navy has been testing a large-scale swarm of autonomous boats designed to overwhelm enemies according to reports from Jeremy Hsu. In the test, a large ship that the Navy sometimes calls a high-value unit, HVU, is making its way down the river’s thalweg, escorted by 13 small guard boats. Between them, they carry a variety of payloads, loud speakers and flashing lights, a .50-caliber machine gun and a microwave direct energy weapon or heat ray.

The free Captioning on Glass app was created by a team at the Georgia Institute of Technology and does precisely what it sounds like: It provides text captions of the spoken word on the small screen of Google’s wearable display. Why startups fail

closed

Many startups build things people don’t want with the irrational hope that they’ll convince them otherwise.

When a startup shuts its doors, it is customary to write an essay that tells the rest of the community what went wrong, called a failure post-mortem. It’s estimated that nine out of 10 startups fail, which is why the technique has become so common as to be a Silicon Valley cliché.

Rewiring your brain to become fluent in math

brain

Basic, deep-seated fluency in math and science—not just an “understanding,” is critical.

By Barbara Oakley: I was a wayward kid who grew up on the literary side of life, treating math and science as if they were pustules from the plague. So it’s a little strange how I’ve ended up now—someone who dances daily with triple integrals, Fourier transforms, and that crown jewel of mathematics, Euler’s equation. It’s hard to believe I’ve flipped from a virtually congenital math-phobe to a professor of engineering.
