New way to instantly recycle plastic waste into 3-D ‘ink’
3-D printers are getting faster and cheaper. This week CarbonD announced a 3-D printer that the company claims is 25 times faster than the average and costs starting around $2,500. Meanwhile, the Xyz home-oriented printer can be had for about $500. Continue reading… “New way to instantly recycle plastic waste into 3-D ‘ink’”
High-quality 3D printing of metal parts with open-source algorithms
America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute that’s focused on helping the U.S. grow capabilities and strength in 3D printing, has recently awarded $540,000 to General Electric and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL) for development of open-source algorithms that will improve additive manufacturing (3D printing) of metal parts. Continue reading… “High-quality 3D printing of metal parts with open-source algorithms”
New 3-D printer that grows objects from goo
Crazy as it may sound, but we may already need to start differentiating between “old-fashioned” and modern 3-D printing methods. Continue reading… “New 3-D printer that grows objects from goo”
Print to order custom organs
Stephen and Amelie Trice learned eight years ago that their three-year-old son Troupe needed a new heart. Troupe was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy, an extremely rare and deadly condition in which the heart is unable to relax between heartbeats. Continue reading… “Print to order custom organs”
Amazon plans to put 3D printers in trucks to speed up deliveries
Amazon wants to speed up shipping, but with this new system they might not have to worry about sending items at all. Amazon has filed several patent applications for a system that could print goods on-demand in “mobile manufacturing hubs”, using 3D printers to produce the items on the curbs outside customers’ homes. Continue reading… “Amazon plans to put 3D printers in trucks to speed up deliveries”
Will ‘Shapies’ replace Selfies?
Photo booths are making a comeback, kids and parents (all certainly equipped with smartphones that take much better pictures) line up all in good cheer, gaily running off with low quality photostrips of themselves. Now if people think photo booths are cool, just wait until they enter the high-tech world of a Shapify booth. Continue reading… “Will ‘Shapies’ replace Selfies?”
3D scanner app for iPad can do full-body 3D models
Itseez3D a mobile scanning software maker, has released an update to its 3D scanner app that can accommodate full-body 3D models. itSeez3D now allows the iPad to create realistic full-body models from 3D scans using Occipital’s Structure Sensor ($379), a snap-on hardware device. Before the update, the app was only capable of scanning the head and shoulders. Continue reading… “3D scanner app for iPad can do full-body 3D models”

New 3D printing technology will put electronics into just about everything
3D printed LED
Electronics, like antennas and batteries can be 3D printed. But LED’s and semiconductors have been elusive. You would need some other manufacturing technique to make them work, which limits what they can do and where they’ll fit. A team of Princeton researchers recently solved this problem, however.

Streetscooter C16 – an electric car 3D printed on a Stratasys 3D printer
Streetscooter
The production of engineering of e-mobility components team from Aachen University built the Streetscooter ‘C16′ electric car using a Stratasys objet1000 multi-material 3D-printer. All the vehicle’s exterior parts, including the large front and back panels, doors, bumper systems, side skirts, wheel arches and a few interior components, were machine fabricated with tough digital ABS materials.
