Rethinking the way we publish online

Apple’s Newsstand

There is a pretty clear preference on the part of many publishers for creating an online or mobile experience that looks as much as possible like the physical magazine or newspaper it is intended to replace.  This is something Apple reinforces with its Newsstand platform, which has virtual shelves with tiny virtual magazine covers and newspaper front pages. In many cases this approach is not surprising, but is it the best way to either publish or consume content.  Which is why some of the most interesting experiments in online content are coming from those who are not just thinking outside of the box, but aren’t even willing to admit that there is a box.

Apple stores start selling $199 Philips Hue custom LED light kits

The Apple Store sells more smart devices for the home other that the Nest learning thermostats.  The retail chain will soon begin selling Philips’ ‘Hue’ LED light bulb kits, which let you control the color of light in your rooms from your smart device.

Apple rules the mobile market

Apple overshadows other mobile phone companies where it counts the most: profits.

The Apple iPad rules the tablet market and the iPhone is a popular among smartphone users, even though a panoply of devices running Google’s Android owns the majority of the smartphone market. We also know Research in Motion is in serious decline, and Nokia is struggling to reverse its slide through Windows Phones — a strategy set back at least temporarily as customers wait for Windows Phone 8, given that current Nokia smartphones won’t run Microsoft’s first serious version of Windows Phone.
