Input from humans can make the Internet of Things smarter

internet of things

Internet of Things (IoT) systems usually consist of a set of sensors that collect information, which is then transmitted between different devices without human intervention. At the same time, today’s mobile infrastructure — the devices, the apps — is typically all about human interaction.

Will we have any privacy when everyday objects are connected to the Internet of Things?

pivacy

Consumers who are wary of privacy can  take some comfort in the settings tab of our smartphones or browsers, which allow us to tell a device not to track our location or monitor what we are reading. But what can they do when the internet-connected device is inside their body or mounted on a city lamp-post? (Video)

Internet of Things gets a battery-free chip the size of an ant

Ant-sized-chip

Ant-sized chip.

The Internet of Things has been around for awhile. As chips get smaller and cheaper, we should be able to embed them in everyday items. Appliances, lighting, doors, climate control—all these things (and many more) get a chip and an internet connection. They can send data and receive commands. (Video)

Dropcam’s computer algorithm lets a camera know who people are in the field of view.

There’s a gold rush underway to connect our devices to the web. For many, the devices are the keys to the kingdom — either riches in the form of selling data or from creating a widely used platform for services or applications. Yet what is becoming increasingly clear is that these models reflect a divide between cultures when it comes to the internet of things.

Battery-free WiFi devices that run on radio waves

battery-free-devices

What if devices could pull enough power wirelessly from the air to run themselves and send signals?

Mobile devices have become radically smaller and more powerful in the past 10 year. The list of tech-related tasks that the mobile devices we all carry around has grown longer by the year. The next step in technology’s great disappearing act? Absorption into our clothes, body, and environment.

The future impact of the Internet of Things can’t be underestimated

Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a hot new buzzword. Its purpose and definition are grossly misunderstood. When some people hear the term IoT they immediately associate it with a refrigerator reminding us to order milk or our Fitbit wearable device tweeting how we just ran 4 miles. Neither of those uses are very compelling to most of us which makes it hard to fathom how experts can predict that by 2020 there will be greater than a one trillion dollar market that vendors will be trying to claim a piece of.
