Digital technology is changing both how words and ideas are created and proliferate, and how they are studied.

The fundamental building blocks of language and culture are words and phrases, much as genes and cells are to the biology of life.  Words are how we express ideas.  Tracing their origin, development, and spread is not just an academic pursuit but a window into a society’s intellectual evolution.

Researchers analyzing New York Times archives to predict the future

Researchers are creating software that analyzes 22 years of New York Times archives, Wikipedia and about 90 other web resources to predict the future.

Microsoft and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology researchers are creating software that analyzes 22 years of New York Times archives, Wikipedia and about 90 other web resources to predict future disease outbreaks, riots and deaths — and hopefully prevent them.

Sun City, Arizona

In 1960 in the U.S., the average life expectancy for all races and sexes was 69.7 years.  In 2010, the average life expectancy increased to 78.7 years.  In 1959, entrepreneur Del Webb built Sun City, Arizona.  Sun City was the first active retirement community for the over-55.  Webb predicted that retirees would flock to a community where they were given more than just a house with a rocking chair in which to sit and wait to die.  (Pics)

European Space Agnecy wants a 3D printed building on the moon

Moonbase

The European Space Agency wants to 3-D print a moon base.  But one of the biggest challenges would be the expense (in terms of energy) to get supplies off of Earth.  One way is to send as little as possible to the Moon.  Couldn’t we just make a moon base out of rock?  After all, the moon is already made of rocks. U.S. scientists make a breakthrough in tuberculosis

Tuberculosis most commonly affects the lungs, is transmitted via the air and caused by strains of mycobacteria.

Worldwide, more than 2 billion people are struck down with tuberculosis (TB).  Scientists in the U.S. have made a medical breakthrough that could save hundreds of thousands of lives.

Obamacare will cost the average American family $20,000 a year: IRS

The cheapest plan for family will cost $20,000 per year.

American families will be forced to buy conventional health insurance that primarily benefits the pharmaceutical industry under Obamacare. By 2016 the cheapest health insurance plan available will cost a typical American family $20,000 a year, according to the IRS.

Coursera – best new startup of 2012

Tech Crunch has picked Coursera as the 2012 Crunchies’ “Best Overall Startup” for 2012.  Coursera was chosen because more than anything else our country is heading into a period where higher education and job training is not catching up with the pace of innovation.  The creative part of “creative destruction” has not yet kicked in. Coursera has opened up access to proprietary content, over 200 courses from over 33 top international and domestic schools like Stanford and Princeton and is one of the bright points of light pointing towards value and job creation in the creative space.
