South Africa-based Desert Wolf, the maker of a drone that fires pepper spray bullets, says it has received its first order for the machine. The company told the BBC it had secured the sale of 25 units to a mining company after showing off the tech at a trade show.

Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla at Gigaom’s Structure conference, said one of the biggest opportunities for entrepreneurs and innovators in the enterprise is cutting out the human IT staff and going full automation, potentially with technologies like deep learning. “It’s ridiculous to have humans manage the level of complexity that they do. People are a big cost in IT. Let’s take that out,” said Khosla. (Video)

The map above shows the largest company by revenue in every state in the U.S.  The map drew information from Hoover’s, a Dun & Bradstreet company,  database of company profiles. It was created by Mike Simmons in collaboration with Broadview Networks. The site updates information based on figures available from the most recent fiscal year.

Toddlers who play non-educational games on touch screens have lower verbal test scores: Study

“Technology can never replace a parent’s interaction with his or her child.”

Children who played non-educational games using touch-screen devices had lower verbal scores upon testing, according to a recent study by pediatricians from the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York. The study examined children from 0-3 years old that used touch-screen devices to determine if their use was of any educational benefit to infants and toddlers.

Jobs lost to automation may not be all doom and gloom

Arrival of human level automated systems marks a transformative time in history.

Nearly half of U.S. jobs could be at risk of computerization over the next two decades, according to a new study from the Oxford Martin Program on the Impacts of Future Technology. This does not necessarily need to be bad news, says futurist Thomas Frey in a recent Futurist Magazine essay.
