Only 43% of Americans use their smartphone for making calls.
What do most consumers do with their smartphones? Believe it or not, it’s not making phone calls. When using their mobile devices making calls ranks close to the bottom of the top five smart phone uses.
The city of Victoria, British Columbia, is taking a new approach to handling drunken, out-of-control revelers causing trouble in public places. The police hand such people lollipops. Councillor Charlayne Thornton-Joe explained why it works:
Ms. Thornton-Joe said after the men popped a lolly in their mouths, their nasty energy all but dissolved. “They got calmer after taking the lollipops,” she said. “It had an immediate effect.” […]
More than 12,000 — mostly angry — comments have been posted on Netflix’s blog since it announced the new plan July 12.
Netflix recently announced that customers would have to pay extra for unlimited online video streaming starting September 1 and many subscribers are an unhappy bunch. Currently, Netflix members can get unlimited streaming and unlimited (mailed) DVDs for $9.99 a month but under the new plan announced, members will have to pay $15.98 a month to get both services ($7.99 for unlimited streaming and $7.99 for unlimited DVDs).

It is often said a picture is worth a thousand words. But there only a few rare photos that tell more than a thousand words. Those pictures tell a powerful story, a story poignant enough to change the world and galvanize each of us. Over and over again…
“Perfected television and radio telephone combined!”
Seagram’s advertised its VO Canadian whiskey back in the mid-1940’s with a series of extremely manly magazine ads about “Men Who Plan Beyond Tomorrow”. Each of the ads depicted a different miracle that would transform postwar America and they were glorious. (Pics)
The percentage of significant others, spouses and parents who admit to digital snooping is on the rise.
Many people are left slightly creeped out by the many ways strangers collect their online data through targeted online advertising. Strangers aren’t the only people who are likely to collect personal information without your notice according to a new study.
Bono and his U2 bandmates have pulled in $85.8 million on their 360 tour.
The concert touring business is enjoying a healthy comeback this year after struggling in 2010. Despite the slow economy acts like U2, Kenny Chesney, Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga are bringing in concert goers.
Cisco has designed an impressive infographic detailing how the ‘Internet Of Things‘ will affect everyday life. Or rather, how it won’t. As of 2008, the number of ’things’ connected to the Internet surpassed the number of people on earth. By 2050, there will be 50 billion things, ranging from your smartphone to believe it or not, cattle. Wireless sensors (transmitting 200 MB of data per cow each year) have been affixed to cows, instantly notifying a farmer when one is sick. (pic)
“Cell phones cause cancer.” “No they don’t!” “Yes they do.” “No they don’t!“
Back and forth it goes, like the world’s slowest game of tennis. One study spends 6 months proving that cell phones turn you into a giant walking tumor, and another pops up showing that cell phones cause nothing but an increased need to tell people what you’re doing…
Festivals will be so much better with composting toilets.
As festival season rolls on, many party goers will have been putting up with the ordeal of smelly, chemical-laden and often disgustingly soiled portable toilets. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Roskilde’s p-trees have already tackled public urination, and I’ve written before about how the green-minded and ultra-friendly UK Shambala Festival has embraced some delightfully airy and well-maintained composting loos. But it’s worth giving a shout out to the folks behind those loos—and noting that they are available for purchase for private homes, camp sites, and just about anywhere where pooping takes place…
