Airplane flies across U.S. powered by sunshine

Solar Impulse

The goal of Solar Impulse is to fly around the world using no fuel other than sunlight. But before the solar plane circumnavigates the globe they will fly across the U.S. Solar Impulse took off on May 3 proving that airplanes can fly long distances on nothing more than sunshine. (Photos)

Urbee II – 3D printed car drives toward mass production

Urbee

While major car manufacturers are exploring 3D printing for prototyping car parts, it’s inevitable that a road-worthy 3D printed car is not too far into the future.  Thanks to KOR EcoLogic the future of 3D printed cars could arrive soon. An all-electric vehicle that never needs to be plugged in

Electric cars carrying receiving coils could charge themselves with embedded transmitting coils in the roadways.

When you think of an all-electric car you may picture it cruising down the highway, emitting little noise and no noxious fumes. It’s such an improvement that you have to wonder why only a handful of all-electric vehicles are now available on the mass market.

Pilotless aircraft could be flying before cars go driverless

The Jetstream mission is part of a project to develop the technologies and procedures that will allow large commercial aircraft to operate routinely and safely without pilots.

A twin-engined Jetstream will take off from Warton Aerodrome in Lancashire, England, and head north towards Scotland within the next few weeks. Like any other flight, the small commuter airliner will respond to instructions from air-traffic controllers, navigate a path and take care to avoid other aircraft. But the pilot flying the aircraft will not be in the cockpit: he will have his feet firmly on the ground in a control room back at Warton.
