Lilium: The first electrical vertical take-off and landing plane

oceanflight

There will soon be a personal craft that can take off and land vertically. It will be electric and seat two people, and is the starting point for what is hoped will be a generation of environmentally friendly and quiet planes. CEO Daniel Wiegand is wanting the plane to be suitable for daily use as an airport is not needed.

Powerwall is Tesla’s new idea for harnessing and storing green energy

Tesla_Powerwall

Powerwall will harness energy from renewable sources and make it available for household use or make it available on a distributed grid . The battery would store energy when demand is low and release it during peak periods when energy supplied by large power stations is expensive.

New form of light discovered

Photon_web_1024

A new form of light was discovered by Prof Paul Eastham of Trinity Dublin’s School of Physics and Prof John Donegan of Science Fondation CRANN. The discovery could have major implications in fibre-optic communications. A study of light’s angular momentum shows that it can be a fraction instead of a multiple.

6.3 million liters of drinkable seawater made per day by scientists in India

seawater

A new filtration method has allowed scientists in India to make potable water from seawater. 6.3 million litres made by using waste steam from a nuclear reactor to purify the water. The filtration methods also filter out arsenic and uranium from groundwater.

Scientifically designed music to help improve concentration

A new music service called Focus@will helps you to reduce distractions and maintain productivity. The neuroscience tested technology can alter the brain to a state of improved productivity. Most people can only concentrate for a maximum of about 100 continuous minutes before needing to take a quick break to stretch, move about, maybe get a drink of water, and so on before they resume for another session. The focus@will system makes it faster and easier for you to concentrate – it brings you a focused flow state and then keeps you there.

Blockchains are becoming the new secure way to share data

bitcoin

Even in 1981 inventors were trying to solve the Internets problems of privacy, security and inclusion with cryptography. With every new process, no solution was perfect, because a third party was involved. Paying with credit card was insecure because too much personal information was involved and transaction fees were steep. In 1998, Nick Szabo wrote a short paper entitled “The God Protocol” in which his point was: Doing business on the Internet requires a leap of faith.

Predict the future better by thinking exponentially

thumb_1149_default_big

For many many years we have been living in the same places using the same tools, eating the same foods. All part of a very linear history of existence. However when looking at today’s world, you can see that technology is growing faster than our kids.

Using Games to Further Quantum Computing

RUSSIA-GAMES-VIDEOS-SCIENCE-TECHNOLOGY

There is a battle raging between human and machine. Even though machine consciousness is still a long way away, computed algorithms are making choices that once needed human input. Recently Google’s AlphaGo algorithm beat a professional player in the game Go. An achievement that demonstrates the speed and development of machine capabilities. However, there is still much to do to make computers think like a human. Through games we can teach computers how to solve problems intuitively.

NOTE: The field of game science is a hot new field. For anyone interested in learning game theory and how to enter the field of game development, check out DaVinci Coders.

Redefining Space as a Commodity through Coworking and Coliving

betahaus-coworking-berlin 4g6

Basing your business models on commercializing untapped resources is a good way to build profitable companies. Facebook taps its users to generate content and now other organizations are realizing the potential of gathering, processing, and storing data. Other industries are using space as a resource, like utilizing rooftops of large malls and buildings to build solar panels. Airbnb allows people to make income off unused space in their homes by renting to travelers. Space is becoming a commodity.

Skyfarms, Wind-powered, vertical structures, are the future of agriculture

Aprilli-Design-Studio-Urban-Skyfarm2

The future of farming is coming to the big city. Skyfarm, a hyperboloid tower that combines different farming techniques, from aquaponics to traditional soil based methods, in a bamboo structure that generates wind energy, won an award at the 2014 World Architecture Festival’s Future Projects Experimental category. The design was praised by the jury as a “thorough, believable, and beautiful project.”

The Future of Tampons

dv1051020

Is it possible to draw blood without causing pain? This problem has plagued the medical industry for decades. The old archaic needle is getting replaced by tiny vacuums and laser beams, but for women it could become much easier than that. In 2014, an engineer at Harvard named Ridhi Tariyal hit on a far simpler workaround. “I was trying to develop a way for women to monitor their own fertility at home,” she told me, and “those kinds of diagnostic tests require a lot of blood. So I was thinking about women and blood. When you put those words together, it becomes obvious. We have an opportunity every single month to collect blood from women, without needles.”
