World’s Fastest High Speed Internet for Only $26 per Month in Hong Kong

Hong Kong

Population density in Hong Kong helps its broadband companies reach users at low cost.

Hong Kong residents can enjoy astoundingly fast broadband at an astoundingly low price. It became available last year, when a scrappy company called Hong Kong Broadband Network introduced a new option for its fiber-to-the-home service: a speed of 1,000 megabits a second — known as a “gig” — for less than $26 a month.

10 Most Eccentric Millionaires

million a97564_g221_6-kenya-tribe

1.) The British millionaire who traded his mansion
for a mud hut after being adopted by tribe in Kenya

Most people return from Kenya with photos of giraffes and lions, and tales of their time on safari. But one millionaire has come back with the title of elder of a Masai tribe. Graham Pendrill is the first white person to gain such an honour from the group after solving a potentially violent inter-tribal dispute while on a month-long trip to the East African country last year…

Circus Historian Al Stencell Provides an Insider’s View of the Vanishing World of Sideshows, Freaks and Screamers

fortean_times_10039_5 sideshow 412312

Groups like this are becoming history.

“At school I’d see guidance councillors and they’d say, “What career would you like?”

And I’d say, “I want to be in the circus.”

And they’d say, “No, no, no, no, no. How about advertising?”

But since landing a summer job, aged 12, at a travelling fair in 1958, Al W Stencell has never left the circus. By the age of 27 he had started The Royal Brothers Circus with a man named Johnny Frazier, only two hours after they met…

California Libraries Targeted for Takeover by Private Equity Firms

Public libraries in Camarillo, Santa Clarita and Ventura have all been targeted for a takeover by Library Systems and Services (LSSI), a private company headquartered in Maryland and majority-owned by the private equity firm Islington Capital Partners. Privatizing public libraries means libraries will be de-professionalized and residents will pay more and receive less, while LSSI makes a profit for its investors and shareholders. Instead of listening to residents, the City Council created a ‘Citizen’s Advisory Committee’ to review Santa Clarita’s library system and its needs and make recommendations for moving forward with LSSI. The committee had no decision-making power, and was widely criticized as a thinly veiled attempt to silence critics.

Judge Allows Sony’s Request For Identifying Information For Anyone Who Visited Hacker’s Sites

PS3 slimcode1

Sony is aiming at hackers.

This is a rather disturbing turn of events. Federal Magistrate Joseph Spero has approved a request by Sony to subpoena the hacker GeoHot’s web host, as well as YouTube, Google, and Twitter, for identifying information on anyone who has accessed, commented, or viewed information relating to thehack. At best this is lazy on Sony’s part and irresponsible on Magistrate Spero’s, and at worst it is a deliberate and malicious wholesale violation of privacy.

The pretense for this wildly overreaching action is that Sony needs this information to prove the case should be tried in San Francisco, in federal court and close to Sony’s headquarters. Why? Because it’s in Sony’s terms of service. This after another judgenoted previously that by Sony’s standards, “the entire universe would be subject to [her] jurisdiction.”

Magic Hat Fuels Brewing Process With Beer Waste

magic-hat 2345

A great step towards sustainable brewing.

There’s a lot that breweries can do—and are doing—to green their facilities. Some are easy, anyone-can-do-this steps like sending spent grains to local farmers. Others are innovative tricks that no one else has tried before. New Belgium probably gets the most attention (not unfairly—it’s truly a leader for sustainable beer) for identifying waste and turning it into a resource. But it’s not the only one. Magic Hat is now capturing wasted energy from the spent grains and turning it right back around to fuel the brewing process.

Teen heart throb or creative entrepreneur?

Profits Double For Business Selling Pre-Loved Products

Winmark-Corp

Might it be the United State’s fragile economy? Or maybe, just maybe, a slow awakening to the inherent fallacy in the myth that bright, shiny new products will make us happy? Whatever the root cause, Americans seem to be embracing pre-loved products over virginal, with a new fervour. At least, it seems so for the reuse businesses run by Winmark Corp. who recently announced that their profits had nearly doubled ($10.3 million for 2010), against the previous years trading…
