Google Glass available to students and faculty at Yale University

The Yale University Library, in cooperation with the Instructional Technology Group (ITG) and the Student Technology Collaborative (STC), has added the futuristic eyewear, Google Glass to its collection of media devices at the Bass Library. The eyewear has unofficially been dubbed “Yale Bass Glass.”  The device will be loaned to faculty and student groups during the spring semester who can use it to explore the potential of Google Glass in enhancing classroom instruction and the research experience.

Is this the end of the golden age for higher education?

One way to improve life for the new student majority is to raise the quality of the education without raising the price.

Interest in using the internet to slash the price of higher education is being driven in part by hope for new methods of teaching, but also by frustration with the existing system. The biggest threat those of us working in colleges and universities face isn’t video lectures or online tests. It’s the fact that we live in institutions perfectly adapted to an environment that no longer exists.

‘Hello Ruby’ – a children’s book that teaches programming to 4 – 7 year olds

Finnish programmer Linda Liukas had a major crush on Al Gore as a teenager. She wanted to share her passion for the then-vice president with a fan page. She didn’t have the pre-made templates that Tumblr and WordPress now place at our fingertips so built a site from scratch by teaching herself HTML and CSS.

Singularity University to launch its first $50 million venture fund to tackle world’s problems

Later this year, Singularity University, an education center and accelerator based at Mountain View’s NASA Ames Research Center, will launch its first venture fund giving forward-looking startups a chance at $50 million.

Harvard and MIT make a strong case for MOOCs

MOOCs can make a meaningful difference even if we don’t yet know what that will look like.

Harvard and MIT have made a compelling case for the potential benefits of massively open online courses, or MOOCs despite low completion rates. They released a draft of a working paper that is rich on data about their respective HarvardX and MITx courses and focuses on what has always been a faulty focal point of many MOOC criticisms. In a free, online environment, completion rates are vastly overrated.

1 in 4 adults hold educational credentials other than an academic degree

A report  from the U.S. Census Bureau says that in the  fall of 2012, more than 50 million U.S. adults, or one in four, had obtained a professional certification, license or educational certificate apart from a postsecondary degree awarded by colleges and universities. This is the Census Bureau’s first-ever report on this topic.
