Drones provide Colorado flooding assistance until FEMA grounded them

Falcon UAV

There has been unbelievable flooding going on in Colorado. The rain has made it difficult (or impossible) for airplanes and helicopters to get in and out of the area. Drones can fly in and out, though, and while they’re not able to pick up people or drop off supplies, they are able to make damage assessment maps to help relief agencies coordinate their efforts. Or at least, they were, until the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) showed up and grounded them. (Video)

UK’s Angel CoFund can super-charge angel syndicates with extra cash

The Angel CoFund is a government-backed fund in the UK.

Startups in the UK that are raising financing have a new route to funds in the shape of a government-backed fund which can super-charge an Angel round with extra cash. The UK government-backed fund, Angel CoFund ,is able to make initial investments of between £100,000 to £1 million into businesses, alongside syndicates of business angels. Angel CoFund launched in November 2011, and it was an early backer of Yplan, the events app which this year raised $12 million and PlayJam (a games maker for smart TVs). The fund started out investing in just some parts of the UK, but now it works nationwide. And it’s now had its first exit in its short, two year history.

Google now triple-encrypts all data in Google Cloud Storage

Until all pieces of the cloud — and the internet — are known secure, it’s hard to trust that any level of server-side encryption will completely do the job.

You would probably think that the NSA and other shadowy government agencies are the world’s biggest cloud proponents: all your data, all the time, in the cloud, where Prism and XKeyscore can, apparently, access it.
