U.S. intends to make public drug company payments to doctors despite calls for delay

Scores of doctors’ groups have called for postponement, but the Obama administration intends to stick to its 30 September deadline for making public a database detailing payments and gifts from the drug industry to US physicians, a spokesperson for the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) said on 15 September.

Angel Investing: Rise of women investors fuels businesses run by women

Amy Norman and Stella Ma started pitching investors on their San Francisco-based startup, Little Passports, in 2009. Both women had young children and Norman was pregnant. The overwhelming majority of the investors they met with were men who wanted to know “if we were running this as a ‘lifestyle company,’” Ma recalls. Investors passed and word got around Silicon Valley that “there’s no way women like this could grow a company fast enough” to satisfy venture capitalists, Norman says.

Cignifi raises funding to provide credit scores for people in emerging markets

Cignifi relies solely on mobile phone behavioral data.

Financial institutions, in the developed world, use credit history in order to assess a person’s creditworthiness and subsequently issue them financial products at personalized terms.. Unfortunately, that’s difficult to do in emerging markets, where mobile phones are more prevalent than traditional credit history.

Pre-VC rounds are shaking up early-stage funding

The Sense sleep tracking device has been backed by angel investors and crowdfunding campaigns.

Wall Street Journal’s Evelyn Rusli reports that startups are tapping new sources of early-stage funding, including ad hoc networks of wealthy tech executives doing some investing on the side, and that should give some big venture capital firms pause. Twenty-three year old entrepreneur James Proud is the latest example. He has raised $10.5 million from a circle of well-connected angel investors and an additional $2.4 million in a Kickstarter campaign for his sleep-tracker device Hello.

Darker shades of blue reflect those at the richest end of the wealth spectrum, while darker shades of red reflect those at the lower end. As you can see in the map, there’s a wide gulf between the fortunes of America’s richest.

Job growth is faster in states that raised minimum wage

The 13 states that raised their minimum wages on Jan. 1 have added jobs at a faster pace than those that did not.

The Department of Labor released new data that suggests that raising the minimum wage in some states might have spurred job growth, contrary to what critics said would happen.
