Emotional Health of College Freshman Has Declined to Record Low

college-stress

The economy has added to the stress, not just because of financial pressures
on their parents but also because the students are worried
about their own college debt and job prospects.

The emotional health of college freshmen — who feel buffeted by the recession and stressed by the pressures of high school — has declined to the lowest level since an annual survey of incoming students started collecting data 25 years ago.

Amazon is Selling More Kindle e-Books Than Paperbacks

Kindle3Books

Amazon has sold “millions” of third-generation Kindle electronic readers in the most recent quarter.

Amazon.com (AMZN) is now selling more Kindle e-books than paperbacks, the world’s biggest online retailer reported. But Amazon’s fourth-quarter financial results were mixed.  Amazon says net income for the quarter climbed 8%, which surpasses Wall Street expectations. But revenue fell short, sending shares down nearly 10% at one point in extended trading.

Should the government here have this kind of power?

On Thursday Jan 27th at 22:34 UTC the Egyptian Government effectively removed Egypt from the internet. Nearly all inbound and outbound connections to the web were shut down. The internet intelligence authority Renesys explains it here and confirms that “virtually all of Egypt’s Internet addresses are now unreachable, worldwide.” This has never happened before in the entire history of the internet, with a nation of this size. As China gears up for the Year of the Rabbit, the nation’s Communist authorities have censored a bunny cartoon with political overtones. The Chinese New Year – which falls this year on February 3 – is the country’s biggest holiday. Families come together for several days of feasting and gift-giving. The three-minute animation begins with rabbit babies being poisoned, a blatant reference to a recent toxic milk scandal that left six children dead…

How could there possibly be antibiotics in my milk?

The dairy industry is butting heads with the FDA over the agency’s plan to increase testing for antibiotics in milk. Food safety advocates are concerned about overuse of drugs in dairy cows (and increased antibiotic resistance in humans), while the industry says the new testing procedures would cause a lot of milk to be wasted because the results can take a full week to come back.

Certain farms are already caught regularly with milk containing illegal levels of drugs—and farmers also use drugs that are not regularly tested for.

LED Teeth Are the Latest Trend in Japan

led-teeth-007

A man shows off his stick-on lights, a new idea in teeth fashion.

Technology and the height of fashion don’t often go hand-in-hand. Apple devices, smartphones, and PMPs may count as a fashion accessory, but the latest processor, fastest SSD, or a next-gen graphics card don’t. That hasn’t stopped the Japanese trying to think of novel ways to make certain components fashionable, though. While the well-known bits of a PC don’t fit the bill, those little LED lights that appear on most home electronics devices apparently do. (videos)
