The U.S. economy is in a tough state, with mile-high deficits and slow growth in jobs. There are other countries that are pulling ahead, but some cling to the hope that startups and the spirit of entrepreneurship embodied in Silicon Valley could save the country. That’s one of the conclusions reached by a team of Harvard Business School professors who toured the valley this fall.

Top Kickstarter cities in the U.S. (Infographics)

When it comes to getting your big idea funded by strangers size matters.

Three of the most populated metro areas in the U.S., New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, are the top three Kickstarter cities in America when it comes to total funds raised, according to data compiled by ThingsWeStart.com. Chicago, Austin, and Boston also make the top 10 list.

Is Kickstarter a crowdfunding platform or just another form of entertainment?

The fact that OUYA raised so much money so fast speaks more to our fantasies than the market reality.

OUYA is the latest Kickstarter darling. It is “a new kind of video game console” that connects to your HDTV like an XBox but allows anyone to publish games like the Android Marketplace. The company behind the device raised their $1 million target in eight hours, and have reached $5 million with more than three weeks left in their campaign. Proponents of Kickstarter’s populist commercialism see OUYA as an unmitigated success.

Crowdfunding from customers – new class of investors for startup capital

The amount of capital available for entrepreneurs when you count the customer market is much larger.

The startup community gave itself a high five in April when the JOBS Act was signed. Crowdfunding would enable startups to reach out to the whole world to get access to funding, not just a small cabal of investors living in a 20-mile radius of Menlo Park.

Crowdfunding temporarily halts oil extraction in Ecuador

No drilling here for now.

Ecuador had agreed last year to accept money in exchange for not drilling foroil in Yasuní National Park, an area of the Amazon rainforest that last year set a record for the most mammal, bird, amphibian and plant species in the world.

But a fundraiser was held last night that collected the $116 million necessary to temporarily halt exploitation of the area for oil…
