Will entrepreneurship save the country?

William Sahlman, professor of entrepreneurship at the Harvard Business School

There are other countries that are pulling ahead, but some cling to the hope that startups and the spirit of entrepreneurship embodied in Silicon Valley could save the country. That’s one of the conclusions reached by a team of Harvard Business School professors who toured the valley this fall.

Is Kickstarter a crowdfunding platform or just another form of entertainment?

crowdfunding

The fact that OUYA raised so much money so fast speaks more to our fantasies than the market reality.

OUYA is the latest Kickstarter darling. It is “a new kind of video game console” that connects to your HDTV like an XBox but allows anyone to publish games like the Android Marketplace. The company behind the device raised their $1 million target in eight hours, and have reached $5 million with more than three weeks left in their campaign. Proponents of Kickstarter’s populist commercialism see OUYA as an unmitigated success.

Crowdfunding from customers – new class of investors for startup capital

money jar

The amount of capital available for entrepreneurs when you count the customer market is much larger.

The startup community gave itself a high five in April when the JOBS Act was signed.  Crowdfunding would enable startups to reach out to the whole world to get access to funding, not just a small cabal of investors living in a 20-mile radius of Menlo Park.

GoGoFantasy is a new Kinkstarter for porn

GoGoFantasy is a patent-pending system for crowdfunding porn. Folks with fetishes, grandmas with groin urgings, and couples into copulating can create projects and request cash in return for filming certain acts. For example, one young lady will mount two cameras in a small plane and film her activity in the cabin. And she won’t be reading her Kindle and eating peanuts, if you catch my meaning…

14 Global Projects that could Make You the World’s Next Billionaire

In-search-of-the-next-big-thing-301

Opportunities are often right before our eyes, but few of us can see them.

Futurist Thomas Frey: The super-connected nature of the Internet is giving us a far different “opportunity landscape” than ever before in history. Unlike the painstakingly slow 400-year period between DaVinci’s drawings of flying machines and the Wright Brother’s first flight, development cycles in the digital era can now be measured in hours and minutes rather than decades or centuries.

Crowdfunding: 23 Unusual Ways it May be Applied

Crowdfunding-343

Futurist Thomas Frey: Michael Migliozzi and Brian Flatow started a website called BuyaBeerCompany.com in November 2009 who’s lofty goal was to buy the ailing century old Pabst Blue Ribbon beer company. Working to match the $300 million sale price, in less than two years the pair had attracted over 5 million investors pledging upwards of $280 million, with an average pledge of $40.

Comparing the Senate and House crowdfunding proposals

apple and orange

The differences aren’t miles apart, but not inches either.

As the topic for our Monday’s Startup Junkie Underground, the House (H.R. 2930) and Senate (S.1791) have proposed competing Bills on the topic of crowdfunding. It’s important, however, to know the differences between the two, because the devil is in the details. And, when it comes to H.R. 2930 and S.1791, the differences are pretty crucial. Crowdfunding advocates need to pay attention.

Crowdfunding temporarily halts oil extraction in Ecuador

Yasuni_National_Park.png.492x0_q85_crop-smart

No drilling here for now.

Ecuador had agreed last year to accept money in exchange for not drilling foroil in Yasuní National Park, an area of the Amazon rainforest that last year set a record for the most mammal, bird, amphibian and plant species in the world.

But a fundraiser was held last night that collected the $116 million necessary to temporarily halt exploitation of the area for oil…

Quirky – new crowdfunding site may be the next big thing in retail innovation

ben-kaufman

Ben Kaufman, founder of Quirky

There are a lot of  young kids who want to be inventors. But, when most of the young kids grow up they either grow out of wanting to be an inventor or resign themselves to the excuse that it is the work of only dreamers. When we were younger, we had playful, creative lessons in school on famous inventors like Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Walt Disney.
