Availability of sugar raises prevalence of diabetes: Study

Obesity isn’t driving the worldwide pandemic of Type 2 diabetes as much as the rising consumption of sugar — largely in the form of sweetened sodas.

A worldwide analysis has shown that regardless of sugars effect on obesity, the ebb and flow of sugar in a country’s diet strongly influences the diabetes rate there.

Dental office could be good place for medical checkup: study

You may get more than your teeth checked out at a future visit to your dentist.

20 million Americans each year see a dentist but not a general health care provider a new study shows. The finding suggests dental offices could be good places to screen patients for chronic health problems. By asking their patients a few questions or administering quick health test, dentists could identify those who are at risk for diseases such as diabetes.

Almost two-thirds of deaths in the world are caused by noncommunicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart and lung disease which are rapidly increasing at a cost to the global economy of trillions of dollars, according to U.N. estimates and preliminary results of a new study.

Babies to be Given Anti-obesity Drugs in the Womb

Doctors hope it will prevent the birth of oversized babies.

In a trial described as ‘disturbing’ by weight loss groups, babies will be given a diet drug in the womb to stop them being born overweight.  One hundred obese moms-to-be will be given Metformin as part of a three-year study to tackle obesity rates and reduce the number of difficult births.
