Driverless cars to be launched on UK streets by 2015

Chances are if you have been to London’s Heathrow Airport you have probably caught a glimpse of something called an ULTra PRT transport pod. These driverless pods have been shuttling travelers from terminal to terminal at the massive airport sonce 2011. That’s all well and good, but now these driverless robo-cars are breaking free of their confines and heading out into the city streets. (Video)

Tesla Model S outsells Mercedes, BMW and Audi

More people bought a Tesla Model S, the $70,000 (and up) electric car, in the first quarter of 2013 than bought any of the similarly priced gasoline-powered cars from the top three German luxury brands, according to data from LMC Automotive. About 4,750 buyers bought a Model S while just over 3,000 people bought Mercedes’ top-level sedan. (Video)

Japanese researchers transmit electricity through solid concrete

The researchers used a set of modified tires set on top of the concrete.

Thanks to researchers from Toyohashi University of Technology, the dream of having electric cars without limited range is one step closer to reality.  The group showcased an experiment with the ability to send up to 60 watts through almost four inches of solid concrete.  Although the technique they are using isn’t exactly new, they did manage to squeeze out between 80 and 90%t efficiency is.

And with a few exceptions, it looks like the flyover states aren’t making preparations for the messianic arrival of the electric car. What do you want to bet that in the next presidential election, we’ll add “electric-car” to the litany of liberal-associative words like arugula, lattes, and sushi.
