Tactics by the city of Chicago have put a major dent in the killing trend

So far in 2013, Chicago homicides outnumbered slayings in the larger cities of New York and Los Angeles last year.

Chicago has drawn a lot of attention for the soaring gun violence and gang bloodshed, creating a political test for Mayor Rahm Emanuel in President Obama’s hometown.  But a year later, Chicago has Chicago has witnessed a drop in shootings and crime. Killings this year have dipped to a level not seen since the early 1960s.

 A frightening number of drug-related deaths in Mexico

Raymond Alvarez: The quickly rising numbers graphically displayed on a Los Angeles Times web page are telling. Mexico’s drug war story is darkened by numbers, staggering numbers. There were 7,337 drug-related deaths in 2008, the Times reports. The death toll from terrorist attacks in Mumbai last year approaches the average weekly body count in Juarez, which is just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas.

Brazil has a really big problem with car theft. In fact, the criminals and drug dealers that steal most of the cars take them to areas so dangerous, that the police will simply cut deals with the gangs to get the stolen cars back. Now however, there are plans to use technology to stop the criminals in their tracks.
