Eric Schmidt urges action to regulate mini-drones

Warning of mini-drones’ potential as a terrorist weapon.

Eric Schmidt, the influential head of Google, has called for civilian drone technology to be regulated, warning about privacy and security concerns.  He told the UK’s Guardian newspaper that cheap miniature versions of the unmanned aircraft used by the military could fall into the wrong hands.

Race to build the world’s first driverless car: Infographic

Silicon Valley is winning the autonomous car race

America’s Independent Electric Light and Power Companies magazine ad from 1957.

A 1957 ad shows a family playing a game in their car as it cruises down a highway, its steering wheel unattended. “One day your car may speed along an electric super- highway, its speed and steering automatically controlled by electronic devices embedded in the road,” reads the copy. “Highways will be made safe — by electricity! No traffic jams … no collisions … no driver fatigue.”

Where are the Android users?

800 million Android activations have taken place to date and the rate is about 2 million per day.

Android data is occasionally reported by Google.  The last time Google reported Android data was in September 2012.  We then learned that activations were running at 1.3 million per day and that a total of 500 million total activations had taken place.

Google’s hidden costs

The giant of online search is, of course, Google. You could prove it by comparing search market share, advertising revenue, user data collection or brand recognition, Bing, Yahoo and Ask wouldn’t even come close.  Google’s unchallenged reach has its downside. One major hazard is obvious–super simplified search turns us into false, but confident experts.
